To Dissent and Defend

Liz Spetz
297-8804 Most of the time we’re satisfied residents and taxpayers of our country; we don’t have to
do much more than that to qualify to live here and enjoy the benefits Canada has to offer.
We have our homes, our jobs, businesses, education plans and pensions. We know our
100 Wall Street rights or we know where to get a lawyer to advise us. If we’re concerned or outraged we
can go to the press to announce our views. We may not win every outcome but we have
Ravenscrag the right to be heard. We have the right to vote and the right to self defence. All of this
makes us citizens but none of it makes us patriots.
Patriotism is a love of and commitment to one’s country; usually a willingness to fight for
its rights and beliefs. Being proud to be a Canadian isn’t the same thing. Being a compla-
cent and well fed member of society doesn’t qualify either. Since there are few threats to
our lives and freedoms our commitment has generally not been tested. Griping about the
government doesn’t count as patriotism. Do we know what patriotism is anymore or are
we just entrenched commercial patrons of economic opportunity?

elements of dissent and defence. There’s never complete agreement. There’s never a way
to keep everyone satisfied. However, there is a shared belief that this country and the free-
doms it represents have a unique value and are worth contention. The differences of opin-
ion can stretch on nearly endlessly. It should be the case that every argument is extended
as far as possible in attempting to find a peaceful solution. Sometimes though the degree
of contention moves far beyond verbal debate. Sometimes, rarely we hope, it requires a
