HISTORY
● In 1869, Pennsylvania Governor James Addams Beaver saw the positive impact YMCAs
were having in their communities and established the Bellefonte Family YMCA
● In 1975, the State College YMCA was created
● On January 1st, 2009 the YMCA of Center County was created as a merger of the
Bellefonte and State College YMCAs working together to form one branch
○ YMCA of Center County includes Bellefonte Moshannon Valley, Penns Valley,
State College, and Kepler Pool
● Today, Center County YMCAs serve more than 11,890 members

MISSION AND VALUES


● Nationally: The Y is the nation’s leading nonprofit organization committed to
strengthening communities through youth development, healthy living and social
responsibility
● Locally: The YMCA of Centre County is a charitable, nonprofit organization that
provides opportunities to all individuals and families in the community by putting high
moral values and principles into practice through facilities, programs, services and
activities that build healthy spirit, mind and body. The YMCA of Centre County fully
accepts diversity and promotes community development and cooperation.

COMMUNITY IMPACT
● We are a charitable and non-profit organization
● The YMCA makes sure no one is turned away because of financial reasons in our Open
Doors Policy
○ $388,000 in financial assistance has been given to families in Center County in
2016
○ 1 in 3 members benefit from this policy
● Center County YMCAs serve 1 in 5 kids and teens in the area
● There were more than 21,000 hours of volunteer time with us in 2016
● Our BackPack program allows children to take home food over the weekends to ensure
they’re still getting enough to eat when not at school
