Region 1: Ilocos Region

PRECOLONIAL TIMES TO THE 19TH CENTURY

1. Biag ni Lam-ang
 Genre: Epic poem
 Author: Pedro Bucaneg, “Father of Ilokano Poetry and Literature
 It is notable for being the first Philippine folk epic to be recorded in written
form, and was one of only two folk epics documented during the Philippines'
Spanish Colonial period, along with the Bicolano epic of Handiong.
2. Matilde de Sinapangan
 Genre: Novel
 Author: Ruffino Redondo
 This is the first Iloko novel printed on 1892

20TH CENTURY

 This portrays the Life of an old Man, or a Dreadful Revenge
 It is written by Mariano Gaerlan (1909)
4. “Uray Narigat no Paguimbagan”
 (“Improvement Despite Obstacles”)
 Author: Facundo Madriaga (1911)
5. “Apay a Pinatayda ni Naw Simon?”
 Translated into English as, Why did they kill Don Simon?”
 This is written by Leon C. Pichay (1935)
 It is the first known detective novel in Iloko

1. Librong Pagaarlan nang mga Tagalog nang Uicang Castilla


 Tomas Pinpin, ‘Price of the Filipino Printers” was the first native Filipino to
publish and print this book in 1610.
 It was entirely written by himself in the old Tagalog orthography.
2. “Florante at Laura”
 Genre: A famous epic
 Author: Francisco Balagtas, a prominent Filipino Poet and one of the greatest
Filipino literary laureates for his impact on Filipino Literature
3. Kundiman Songs
 Written by Nicanor Abelardo, a Filipino composer

 This was written while he was in Berlin, Germany in 1887

 Another great book of Rizal
 Author: Dr. Jose Rizal
 In Ghent, Belgiun (1891) exposed the cruelties of the Spanish friars in the
Philippines, the defects of the Spanish administration and the vices of the
clergy told about the oppression of the Spanish Colonial rule.

 Genre: A nine stanza-poem
 Writer: Teo Baylen

 I am the World and other Poems
 Genre: Poem
