To Whom It May Concern,

It pleases me to recommend Dr. Erik Bentzel for your consideration. I have known Dr. Bentzel for seventeen years
and served as his supervisor during the 2010-2011 and for part of the 2013-14 school year. While employed for the
district, Dr. Bentzel taught math at William Penn High School, served as principal of McKinley Elementary School,
served as the District Data Specialist, and as the Director of Information and Technology. Dr. Bentzel currently serves
as the Assistant Superintendent at the Conrad Weiser School District. During his time with the School District of the
City of York, Dr. Bentzel demonstrated competence, dedication to his craft and displayed finely honed skills in
management and supervision.

I consider Dr. Bentzel to be an outstanding Superintendent candidate. He has a tremendous work ethic, has
demonstrated exceptional problem solving skills, and has shown the capacity to adapt to and be successful in
challenging situations. Dr. Bentzel has been successful in his endeavors because of his passion for education, and his
drive to succeed. He uses each of these attributes, along with his leadership skills, to build consensus and carry out
the tasks assigned.

Dr. Bentzel was promoted often in his career as an administrator in this district. As an elementary principal, he
spearheaded the effort to bring the educational strategies of Debbie Diller to his school. Due to his efforts, all of the
elementary schools incorporated the work of Mrs. Diller and it became a district wide initiative. Dr. Bentzel's work in
the Information and Technology Office cannot be ignored. He worked with staff and administration in order to change
the culture of the District from one that was fearful of technology to one where technology has become an integral part
of teaching and administrating.

Another attribute that needs to be mentioned is Dr. Bentzel's dedication to his craft and his commitment to student
achievement. He believes in educating the whole child. His mission of providing the best educational experience for
students governs his actions and his professional demeanor. When problem solving, Dr. Bentzel never chooses the
easy solution over the best solution, nor does he settle for the way things have always been done in the past. He is
not intimidated by bureaucracy and consistently makes decisions that are educationally sound for children.

Dr. Bentzel has excellent knowledge of both learning theory and the application of administrative theory. He has a
vision of what schools can be when best practices are used, and he possesses the ability to lead staff and
administrators to implement that vision.

I recommend Dr. Bentzel without reservations and know that he would bring the same level of deliberate student
centered decision making to your district as he did here in the School District of the City of York. In my opinion, he is
more than prepared to lead a school district.

Sincerely, i\ . j
Wh"
Eric B. Holmes, Ed. D.
Superintendent of Schools
