The Tyndale Commentaries have long been a trusted resource for Bible study. Written by some of the
world’s most distinguished evangelical scholars, these forty-nine volumes offer clear, reliable and relevant
explanations of every book in the Old and New Testaments.

These volumes are designed to help readers understand what the Bible actually says and what it means.
The introduction to each volume gives a concise but thorough description of the authorship, date and
historical background of the biblical book under consideration. The commentary itself examines the text
section by section, drawing out its main themes. It also comments on individual verses and deals with
problems of interpretation. The aim throughout is to get at the true meaning of the Bible and to make its
message plain to readers today.

“The aim of this series is to provide the student of the Bible with a handy, up-to-date commentary on each
book, with the primary emphasis on exegesis. Major critical questions are discussed in the introductions
and additional notes, while undue technicalities have been avoided.”—Donald Wiseman, from the TOTC
general preface

I decided to write a brief review of these volumes. As others have stated these are solid books. They can be a bit brief in the some of the older Old
Testament volumes... And that is why I write, the OT volumes often date back to the early 60's and many really show their age. For the price it is a
great bargain. It's scholarship is fairly conservative but tends to be very fair with other views.

This is my go-to commentary. It covers every book of the Bible at a meaningfully detailed level, yet it's suf ciently introductory that I use it instead of
a study Bible module. The overall quality of the volumes is consistently good (from my conservative, reformed , evangelical perspective) and some of
the volumes are outstanding, especially in the OT. It's an exegetical commentary, not particularly devotional or pastoral, but it's not overly technical
either. It makes a great companion to a more technical commentary like the WBC.

A caveat regarding this review: Providing a review of a commentary set has certain limitations given that the theological perspective of the set can
cause some people to love it and others to dislike it, and in addition all commentary sets are uneven in quality.

The Tyndale Commentary set is written so that original language experience is not a requirement. As such it is useful to the layperson and the
pastor/scholar/student alike. The commentary set is written from an evangelical, conservative perspective. The preface to the set states the
following:

"The aim of this series of Tyndale Old Testament Commentaries, as it was in the companion volumes on the New Testament, is to provide the student
of the Bible with a handy, up-to-date commentary on each book, with the primary emphasis on exegesis. Major critical questions are discussed in the
introductions and additional notes, while undue technicalities have been avoided."

This makes the Tyndale Commentaries especially useful as the ...
