ABSTRACT

THE EFFECT OF USING FAIRY TALE STORIES TO DEVELOP STUDENTS’ READING


COMPREHENSION SKILL

This study deals with the fairy tale stories for reading skill. The formulation of the problem in
this research is: “Does the use of fairy tale stories develop the students’ reading skill to the grade
X students of SMA YAYASAN NURHASANAH Medan in 2018-2019 academic year. The
research conducted at the grade X of SMA YAYASAN NURHASANAH Medan in 2018-2019
academic year. The type of the research was experimental research. The population of them is
120 students with the sample is 60 students, they were divided into one experimental group that
included of 30 students and one control group that included of 30 students. In collecting the data,
the writer used the instrument, it was a essay test. After finding the means score, the standard
derivation and standard error of both groups, the writer applied the statistic t-test. After
calculating and analyzing the data of the research, it was proved on the t-table with df 58 (n = n-2
= 30 + 30 – 2 = 58) at t-critical 0.05 it is obtained 1,67. If compared the value of to and tt, so it is
shown that the value of t-observed is bigger than the value of t-table or 2,17 > 1,67. It stated that
the grade X students of SMA YAYASAN NURHASANAH Medan in 2018-2019 academic year
which is taught by applying fairy tale stories is higher than those without fairy tale stories. With
the other words, the use of fairy tale stories develop the students’ reading skill to the grade X of
YAYASAN NURHASANAH Medan in 2018-2019 academic year. After testing the hypothesis
of the research, it also stated that the Ha is accepted and Ho is rejected.
