“IMPACTOF TRAVEL AGENCIES IN ODISHA FOR TOURISM


DEVELOPMENT. A CASE STUDY OF BHUBANESWAR”

1. INTRODUCTION/ DESCRIPTION: - .

Odisha a maritime state on the east coast of india is bounded by west


bengal and jhadkhand on the north, andhra pradesh on the south, the bay
of bengal on the east and chhatishgarh state in the west. Its location is
between 17 49’ deg north latitude and 81 27’ deg east in 87 29’ deg east
longitudes. Large numbers of small and big rivers dissects the state before
draining in to the bay of bengal which wishes its southern side. As per the
latest census figure, the state ranks eleventh in terms of total population

and ninth in terms of total area. Perpetually washed by the blue waters of
the bay of bengal. It has a total coastal length of 482 kms. The state is
endowed with a vast reserve of mineral as well other resources.
So, here the travel agents can be referred as the shepherd, who
assess the needs of tourists and businessmen and help them make the
best possible travel managements from the many travel options
available. Also many major cruise lines, resorts, and specially travel
groups use travel agents to promote travel packages to the millions of
people who travel every year.
The state has also won accolades both in domestic as well
as international markets for its exquisite art and crafts work of applique,
metal crafts, silver filigree, pata-chitra from the state has won special
appreciations from places in and around the world. Owing to its rich and
varied topography, vibrant culture and captivating festivities, the state of
odisha offers immense tourism delights to the visitors of the state.
Visitors starting from the neighbouring states to the far flung countries
throng the state in different times especially during the festivals.
The rich tourism potential of odisha has own the state a
prestigious award. A travel magazine “travel leisure india and south asia”
Basing on its annual reader survey, rated odisha has the best emerging
tourist destination in the country. As the spanish proverb says, “ he who
would bring home the wealth of the indies must carry the wealth of the
indies with him, so it is in travelling a man must carry knowledge with
him, if would bring home knowledge. It would be always nice to travel if
you knew where going and where you would live where we live, we are
always in other places lost, like sheep”.

2. OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY:-

To study the impact of travel agents for the up-liftment of Tourism in


Odisha. That is to bring in to focus, how travel agents can facilitate the
tourist to attract them for a trouble free rate like mushrooms, but the
question is, Are they providing the required and desired services to the

tourists for the growth of tourism in their area or merely doing their own
business. The main aim of the proposed research is collection of relevant
visitor related statistics for understanding the views of the visitors.

3. KINDS OF DATA AVAILABLE:-

 From State Tourism Department :-


The actual number of prime tourist destination, government operating
or leased tourism facilities there, number registered travelling agents
operating there, State Government income and expenditures of tourism
related properties.

 From Travel Agents / Tour Operator: -


Profile information, Type of services rendered most favoured destination
of the domestic as well as International overnight visitors in the State.
Average income and expenditure of tours, Mode of advertisement and
contracts.

 From domestic as well as International tourists visiting the
State:-
State / Location belonging to reason behind visiting the particular
location, Tentative duration of stay whether coming through any travel
agency or in some packaged tour, Quality of service received etc.

4.DETAILED WORK PLAN:-

The research can be conducted with a blend of primary


research objectives.This research is meant to accrue desired
information from the different sources. The detailed task wise and
methodology, target groups and information procured from each
source will be needed.

1. Preparation of frame / list of important visitors , locations in the
State, conduct sample survey of both domestic and foreign
overnight visitors(taking separate representative sample)/ at all
important visitors locations.

2. Ways of influencing tourists to go for packaged tours or through


travelling agencies.

3. Estimation of the expenditure made by the State Government


in developing of tourism and earning through tourism. To
estimate how these travelling agencies helps in developing
tourism in State as well as national level.

Primary Research (Data Collection} :-


The task involved collection, collection and review of different
facets of tourism in the State.If we take Bhubaneswar as the case
study , the first thing to be done in sampling.

Sample Design :-
The exit interviews are conducted among samples visitors at
different location as well as with different travel agencies
.
Sample Size :-
Destination specific sample size determined, using prevalence
rate. It includes different types of tourists such as, domestic,
international, day visitors etc.Sample sized can be 100, with a
mixed ratio of different types available.

Sampling Method: -
Visiting different hot spots in Bhubaneswar and selecting random
tourists, willing to answer the questionnaire.

Sample Geography: -
Tourist coming to Bhubaneswar, through different travel agents or
agencies, also the travelling agencies operational in that area.

Questionnaire Design:-
It will be objective type, essay in language, and containing the
basic information about the tourist, type of tour, agencies
contacted, expenditure and experiences.

Objective of the questionnaire: -


To understand how the travelling agents are influencing the
development of tourism in the State and how they are mutually
beneficial for the tourists as well as for the State.

Then we can proceed in the following way:-

1. Finalization of questionnaire in consultation with Ministry of


Tourism Officials.
2. Preparation of the Field plan schedule.
3. Execution of field work across the state on a monthly frequency
through structured questionnaire.
4. Back checks to ensure consistency of the data collected from
different sources.
5. Data coding and analyzing.
6. Report writing.

5. Issues :-

Availability of correct data is critical element in research activity and lack


of standard of precise definition has hampered the development of
travel research. Without definitions, measures cannot be taken and data
cannot be generated and compared from study to study. Economic
projections or analytical findings made by sophisticated mode is pure
intuition must be based on some kind of data. Without a quantitative
record of past experiences, only individual , isolated studying making a
limited contribution to the state of the art are possible. This is that State
of affairs in the area of travel research at the present time, Giant strides
are being made , improving travel research by adopting techniques
however the existing body of literature largely consists of individual

isolated studies utilizing different definitions that were set up to solve
only the immediate problem at hand.

7. CONCLUSION:-

A travel agency is a retail business that sells travel related products and
services to customers on behalf of suppliers such an airlines, car rental,
cruise lines, hotels, railways, sightseeing tours and package holidays
that combine several products. to dealing with ordinary tourists most
travel agencies have a separate department devoted to making travel
arrangements for business travellers and some travel agencies
specialize in commercial and business travel only. For the up-liftment
and monitoring of such agencies in our country .Travel Agents
Association of India (TAAI} was formed towards the end of the year
1951 .It is our privilege to inform that TAAI is 69 years old and going
stronger with time.
