Q. What is the relevance of Language, Culture and Society for me as a professional?

The evolution of man is wild and free. Since the time of his creation man has been engaged into
different clans, they formed their particular tribe with common people and common thoughts.
Then man moved to an advance level and formed bigger tribes known as societies, which
comprised not only of common people and common thoughts but they shared common language,
customs and traditions and their particular way of lives. Through centuries, the pattern of
forming and maintain a society has been same with minute changes. One being that the structure
of a society is very complex now from old traditional form of society because now a society has
a common language but apart from that people may know and speak more than one language;
common example is our selves. We have a common language Urdu and we live together but still
we know and speak English, Punjabi, Pushto, Persian etc. Secondly, culture and tradition also
vary in societies and people either they can make a sub-society or they can adjust with the rest.
For example we know many Hindu’s and Christians living in our country. Again we all speak the
same language but there is a wide difference between our culture and traditions. Despite of that
we still live together, eat together, and cheer together. So this is just to give you the clear picture
that one of the vital essentials of human life, that is society, is still the same but the elements of
society are changing rapidly and now we have entered into a new era where everyone speaks of
world as a ‘Global Village’.

If I have to explain the relevance of language, culture and society for me as a professional then
before that I have to ask myself what I expect from this course. I expect to learn socializing, how
to communicate with the people of different societies, observing their cultures and norms and
finding positive aspects of their beliefs that force them to do or think so, giving equal importance
and significance to people with distant faiths then mine, to work collectively with the people of
different groups and ethnic backgrounds and help to rebuild a better and prosperous society.

Now once I get answer to all these questions I believe I will acquire the ‘Civic Sense’. Civic
sense is the ability to distinguish between good and bad. This sense gives you the power to think
not only for yourself but also think for your society. What’s good for you should also be good for
the society and what’s bad should also be bad for the society. This will help me and it can help
all to develop a bonding and correlation with the million people of our society. Imagine if
everyone develops a strong relation of care and peace among themselves then we will overcome
all the bad aspects of our society. Through our deeds of harmony we can end the problems of
rich and poor, hunger and shelter, societal classes, and most of all hatred among each other. I
believe if this happens no one has to worry for their future because if the present is full of colors
then future must be like living in rainbows.

If I earn the kind of knowledge that I expect then no doubt I will be an important and vital part of
the society. A person with such knowledge has the ability to make the foundation of societies
stronger and thicker.

Lastly a few words, we know that history repeats itself. History gives the knowledge to its reader
about past so that people could learn from their experience and should not repeat the mistakes
that were done or committed by the people in past. Language, culture and society will provide us
the knowledge that will be relevant to past, present and future.

Allama Iqbal has inspired us all by saying;

Sitaaron se aage jahan aur bhi hain

Abhi ishq ke imthaan aur bhi hain
