Bank of Canada is pleading with Star Trek fans to stop “Spocking” its five dollar bills. Dangerous Minds
Since Leonard Nimoy’s death, Canadian folks have been “Spocking” the hell out of the 4,435,395 likes
five dollar bill that features a portrait of Canada’s seventh prime minister Sir Wilfrid
Laurier.

Sir Wilfrid now sports, on certain bills at least, pointy ears, the signature Vulcan haircut
and eyebrows and Spock’s mantra “Live long and prosper.” Like Page Contact Us

According to Bank of Canada it’s not illegal to do this but:

“...However, there are important reasons why it should not be done.

Writing on a bank note may interfere with the security features and
reduces its lifespan. Markings on a note may also prevent it from being
accepted in a transaction. Furthermore, the Bank of Canada feels that
writing and markings on bank notes are inappropriate as they are a
symbol of our country and a source of national pride.”

I say Spock the hell out of ‘em if it ain’t illegal. Sir Wilfrid Laurier’s face wasn’t that
interesting, anyway. In fact, let’s just make this a permanent improvement to the

No, it's only illegal if you do it with malicious intent (IE:
trying to turn a $1 into a $10)

Yeah but then again Michael, you guys consider
burning a flag to be an illegal act.. You then publish
a code of practice for the care of the same flag in
which you state that the ONLY correct method of
disposal of an old flag is to burn it.

And I hate to break this to you, but your next

statement is also incorrect. The law of moral
majority stands Therefore, faced with 1,000 altered
bills that have been through the hands of hundreds
of thousands of people, then moral majority states
such action is not a moral offence.

Add to which, that mankind is governed by the laws

of nature/God (even the constitution declares "the
right of mankind as given to them by God") and
currency is a man made construct.

You REALLY need to learn the difference between

the words "illegal" and "unlawful"

Can't find that in my copy of the Constitution.

Just because it's hard to prove, doesn't make it
less illegal. But hey, whatever floats your boat.

Uncle Arty > Guest • 3 years ago

it's really fucking simple, if I take a 5 and try to
change it into a 50 that's intent, if I take five and
draw bill murray on it, how is that intent?

Well for one I am not a fucking slave of the
colonies like you, so your federal bullshit does not
y , y
apply. And two, rules and regulations require
consent. So educate your fucking self.

"with intent to render such bank bill, draft, note, or

fun proving intent and wether such action renders it
thusly..

Just trying to educate people like yourself who'd
rather live in ignorance. I know it's next to
impossible, but I have hope that even someone
from the shallow end of the gene pool (like
yourself) can learn. But after glancing at your other
whiny, petulant posts on this site, it's a small hope.

Maybe explain this to the 'educated' bankers who
roll the money up, stick it up their noses and snort
cocaine through it.

Educate yourself on the difference between illegal
and unlawful Michael Milosevic and then come
back and try to preach. I don't always converse
with the bottom half of the internet, but when I do I
try to make them learn something.

I think you might be trying to talk about the
difference between illegal and immoral, not
unlawful.

And defacing US currency is illegal only if you are

trying to render it unfit for circulation.

English, buddy. THe intent is to alter the currency
for your benefit. Spocking a bill, or squashing a
penny is not an offense. Fun reading though.

Nah, I'd rather not. Honestly, I don't care if people
draw on their money. Just pointing out the law and
letting people make an informed decision.
△ ▽ • Reply • Share ›

davidiwilliams > Guest • 2 years ago

It would be virtually impossible to prove that there
was intent to make the bill "unfit to be reissued."
I've received bills that have marks on them from
banks. At what point does the bill become unfit? Is
the person making the marks aware of this limit?
This is a law where ignorance of the law IS an
excuse as it requires intent to violate the statute.
