Session Guide Title: Observation Checklist for Teachers

What I Enjoyed:
I enjoyed listening to our facilitator, Teacher Jeanne L. Calayon as she give emphasis on the
importance of observation checklist for teachers. Observation is important at every stage of a teacher’s
career. Classroom observation describes the practice of sitting in on another teacher’s class to observe,
learn and reflect. Various aspects of the class can be examined, such as routines, use of time, schedule,
participation, teaching strategies, management strategies, learner interest, and much more.

What I Learned:
I learned that observation checklist is a simple but powerful way to improve teachers’ performance. It is
the declaration of standards to ensure that important tasks are completed. Checklist ensure that higher-order
mental processes is available for complex things to be made easy by the teacher. In addition to helping define clear
goals and creating a shared purpose, classroom observations can provide an objective method for measuring
progress towards these goals and provide a framework for giving constructive and focused feedback that helps
teachers incorporate higher levels of desired behaviors into their interactions with students in the classroom.

What I Wonder About:

I wonder about the benefits for the observed teachers and I come up with the following:
Benefits for the observed…
--Chance to see class through someone else’ eyes
--Chance to re-evaluate the classroom from a different perspective
--Chance to receive input (suggestions, ideas, resources) from a colleague
--Creation of a professional learning community with the best interests of the students in mind
--Personal Professional Development and growth

Suggestions or Remarks:
Good checklists are precise, Gawande notes, “They do not try to spell out everything – a checklist
cannot fly a plane. Instead, they provide reminders of only the most critical and important steps – the
ones that even the highly skilled professionals using them could miss. Good checklists are, above all,
practical.” A teacher will naturally look for support on an issue that is difficult for him or her, but it is
often a great method of being exposed to a new and different approach to teaching.

Session Guide Title: ICT Integration in Instruction and Assessment

What I Enjoyed:
I enjoyed to know that there are many Information Communication Technologies (ICT) strategies
that we can integrate for our student. “An integrated approach allows learners to explore, gather,
process, refine and present information about topics they want to investigate without the constraints
imposed by traditional subject barriers” (Pigdon and Woolley, 1992). An integrated approach allows
students to engage in purposeful, relevant learning.

What I Learned:
I learned that ICT integration in education is not about technology but teaching. It is the
teacher's innovativeness that makes lesson delivery meaningful. The purpose of integrating ICT is to
improve the quality of teaching and learning and to equip learners with 21st century skills. Allen (1997)
believed that the basic skills of the future are the use of powerful technologies. The traditional textbook
can no longer fulfill the need in the rapid changing and the information-explosion world.

What I Wonder About:

Globally, educational systems are adopting new technologies to integrate ICT in the teaching
and learning process, to prepare students with the knowledge and skills they need in their subject
matter. In this way the teaching profession is evolving from teacher-centered to student-
centered learning environments.

Suggestions or Remarks:
According to Kennewell et al. (2000), integration of ICT in teaching requires understanding at a
deeper level to facilitate the development of strategies and process to identify opportunities, solve
problems and evaluate solution. They believe that these higher-level objectives require not only
technical knowledge and skills, but the ability to choose an effective strategy for a problem. Poole (1998)
shared his view that the technology is only a tool to both teacher and student. The effectiveness of the
tool depends entirely on the skills they bring to the learning process.

Session Guide Title: Remedial Instruction

What I Enjoyed:
Remedial education (also known as developmental education, basic skills education,
compensatory education, preparatory education, and academic upgrading) is assigned to assist students
in order to achieve expected competencies in core academic skills such as literacy and numeracy.

What I Learned:
I learned that remedial instruction is arranged for students who have temporarily fallen behind
in their studies. Remedial instruction is also offered to students in need of special assistance. Instruction
starts immediately after diagnosing a learning disability to help a student to catch up in the studies. A
teacher usually takes initiative in offering remedial instruction. Instruction can be arranged either during
normal school hours, or after school hours. Before starting instruction, the school always contacts the
guardians.

What I Wonder About:

I wonder what a remedial teacher does. Remedial therapists usually examine their patients'
workbooks for indications of their problems, and then test them to confirm or diagnose them.
They make use of various remedial aids and methods and advice teachers and parents on ways to assist
the students concerned.

Session Guide Title: Classroom Management

What I Enjoyed:
Classroom management refers to the wide variety of skills and techniques that teachers use to
keep students organized, orderly, focused, attentive, on task, and academically productive during a class.
When classroom-management strategies are executed effectively, teachers minimize the behaviors that
impede learning for both individual students and groups of students, while maximizing the behaviors
that facilitate or enhance learning.

What I Learned:
I learned that classroom management is a term teachers use to describe the process of ensuring
that classroom lessons run smoothly without disruptive behavior from students compromising the
delivery of instruction. It is also the process by which teachers and schools create and maintain
appropriate behavior of students in classroom settings. The purpose of implementing classroom
management strategies is to enhance prosocial behavior and increase student academic engagement
(Emmer & Sabornie, 2015; Everston & Weinstein, 2006).

What I Wonder About:

Suggestions or Remarks:
Generally speaking, effective teachers tend to display strong classroom-management skills, while
the hallmark of the inexperienced or less effective teacher is a disorderly classroom filled with students
who are not working or paying attention.

Session Guide Title: Lesson Planning

What I Enjoyed:
A lesson plan is a step-by-step guide that provides a structure for an essential learning. Before
planning a lesson, it is essential to classify the learning outcomes for the class. It is important because it
helps the teacher in maintaining a standard teaching pattern and does not let the class deviate from the
topic.

What I Learned:
I learned that lesson planning is important because it helps teachers ensure that the day-to-day
activities that go on in their classrooms are providing students with an adequate level of long –term
progress toward the goals outlined in their scope and sequence, as well as their individual education
plans when necessary.

What I Wonder About:

I wonder if lesson planning necessary for effective classroom transaction. A good lesson is a vital
component of the teaching learning process. Starting each lesson with something short and interesting
will going to settle the students and engage them with the lesson. ... Similarly, goals are
very important in curriculum planning because they determine what the student will accomplish.
