COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course emphasizes the process to address medical ophthalmic conditions of clients. The focus
will be on health promotion and health maintenance strategies to meet the physical, developmental,
and psychosocial needs of clients and families with ophthalmic conditions.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
By the end of the course, the students should be able to:
1. Identify and describe types of congenital abnormalities of the Eye
2. Identify and describe medical diseases of the eye, signs and symptoms, diagnosis and
management of ocular diseases.
3. Identify external ocular disease and refer ophthalmic patients to the appropriate personnel
for treatment.
4. Discuss the prevention of ocular disease and rehabilitation of the visually impaired clients.
5. Explain the legal aspect of the care of the ophthalmic patient.

UNIT I
1. History taking

3. Conjunctival tears, subconjunctival haemorrhage, conjunctivitis, both infective and non-
infective
4. Diseases of the lacrimal apparatus
5. Trachoma
6. Burns
7. Cornea and corneal diseases
8. Hyphaemia
9. All types of glaucoma
10. Diseases of the uvea
11. Abnormalities of the Lens
