I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, learners should be able to:
a. Explain the basic concepts in shielded metal arc welding.
b. Discuss the relevance of the course.
c. Explore career opportunities in shielded metal arc welding.
II. SUBJECT MATTER
A. TOPIC: Basic concepts of SMAW,
B. MATERIALS: Hand-outs, Chalkboard, Laptop
C. REFERENCES: Training Regulations, SMAW 1, Metals and
Engineering Sector pp. 1-58
III. PROCEDURE
A. PREPARATORY ACTIVITIES

B. LESSON PROPER
B.1 Motivation
The teacher will ask the following questions.

What will come into your mind when you hear the word concept?
How about the word basic?
The teacher will relate the topic.
B.2 Activity
The teacher will divide the class into three groups. They will identify
the following unit competencies to where it belongs (Basic
Competencies, Common Competencies and Core Competencies).
The group who’ll get the most correct answers will win. They will
select a representative and present it to the class.

- Demonstrate work values
- Practice housekeeping
- Apply safety practices
- Interpret working drawings and sketches
- Perform industry calculations
- Contribute to quality system
- Use hand tools
- Prepare weld materials
- Set-up welding machines
- Fit up weld materials
- Repair welds
- Weld carbon steel plates using SMAW

After the report the learners will answer the following questions:
1. What is the relevance of these competencies to their
strand/course?
2. What are the some career opportunities if they become
competent in SMAW NC 1.

1. What are the unit of competencies that belongs to basic
competencies? common competencies? core competencies?
2. Do you think these competencies are relevance to your course?
3. What are the career opportunities of a professional welder?
B.4 Abstraction
Enumerate the basic competencies, common competencies and
core competencies.
Is this competencies are relevance to your course?
Give at least 5 career opportunities of a professional welder.
B.5 Application
The teacher will again divide the learners into 4 groups. The learners
will have a role on the 4 unit of competencies of the basic
competencies of SMAW NC1.
Group 1 – Receive and respond to workplace communication
Group 2 – Work with others
Group 3 – Demonstrate work values
Group 4 – Practice basic housekeeping

(Formative Test)
Instruction: 1/2 sheet of paper. Answer the following questions.
1. Enumerate the 3 competencies of SMAW NC 1 and its unit of
competencies (17 pts)
2. Is these competencies important in becoming a professional
welder? Why? (3 pts)
3. Give at least 5 career opportunities of a professional welder. (5
pts)
V. ASSIGNMENT
Make your own concept map about welding.
