ASSESSMENT OF THE POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE EFFECTS OF GOOGLE

SEARCH AMONG GRADE 11 STUDENTS OF AMA COMPUTER COLLEGE

CABANATUAN

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Searching is one of the most basic things a senior

high school does on their everyday life as a student, for

doing assignments, projects and also the online education;

especially at AMA Computer College which specializes in

computers and uses the online learning system.

Google is the most known search engine in the internet

today among all the search engines created in the world.

With its powerful algorithms, dominant advertising

platforms and personalized user experience. Of course,

there are also good search engines created. One example of

that is Bing; it also works as Google does, only thing that

differ from both is that Bing offers rewards program that

allows one to accumulate points while searching. These

points are redeemable at the Microsoft and Windows stores.

The Image search also performs flawlessly across all

browsers whereas Google Image search seems to be optimized

by Chrome alone.

Another example of a search engine is Duck Duck Go

which does not collect and store any personal information

unlike Google and Bing. It means that the user can run

searches in peace without saving or inserting private

information. It is the perfect search engine for those who

wish to keep their browsing habits and personal information

private.

Google search is also referred to as Google Web Search

or most commonly known as Google, it is a web search engine

developed by Google LLC which mostly used as a search

engine on the World Wide Web across all platforms handling

more than three billion searches each day.

Among the search engines mentioned above, Google is

the most known and used one since it provides many

different options for customized search using symbols to

include, exclude, specify or require certain search

behaviour and offers specialized interactive experiences

such as flight status and package tracking, weather

forecasts, currency, unit and time conversions, word

definitions and more.

Its main purpose is to hunt for text in publicly

accessible documents offered by web servers, as opposed to

other data, such as images or data contained in databases.

Google currently takes 90% of the search market, and

is one of the most popular websites. Google’s success comes

from their ability to organise pages on the web, return the

most relevant results to any search term, and ultimately

rank those results to enable users to see the sites they

needed quickly and easily.

And that is why it is so popular that almost everyone

only knows Google as the only search engine available in

the web. Google search has always been a great help for

students and workers alike. Not only it provides easy

searches, but also easy access as well.

Above all its convenience and good services, there are

cons to it.

Students have gotten used to the help of Google search

when browsing or researching for projects or homeworks,

forgetting the existence and help of books and other

printed materials. Using the internet is indeed faster and

more convenient than books.

But looking through students’ practices and

behaviours, some students just searches topics they wanted

to search without searching further into the topic, but

with the use of books, students are obliged to read through

all the texts. In addition to that, students have gotten

used to the help of easy searches in the internet resulting

them to take home works not seriously as students should;

they grew dependent on the internet that they treat

studying as something students shouldn’t be serious about.

In this study, the researchers would be assessing the

positive and negative effects of using Google Search to the

Senior High School Students of AMA Computer College.

An interview would be conducted.
