GOAL OF INFECTION CONTROL

Elastria Widita, drg., M.Sc.

Determinants of Infectious Diseases

• After microorganism enter the body, three basic

factors determine whether an infectious disease
will develop:
1. Virulence
2. Dose
3. Resistance

Health or Disease

Health or disease = Virulence x Dose

Body Resistance
– Health : ?
– Disease : ?

• Prevention of infectious diseases : influencing the

determinants to favor health.
• Virulence of microorganism: cannot be changed easily.
• Enhance our resistance : specific immunizations
(hepatitis B and Tetanus).

Goal of Infection Control

• Reduce the dose of microorganism that may be

shared between individuals and contaminated
surfaces.
• “The more the dose is reduced, the better the
chances for preventing disease spread.”
Preventing Disease Spread

• Procedures that minimize spraying or spattering oral

fluids
– Rubber dam, high volume evacuation, pre-procedure mouth
rinse.
– Goal: Reduce the dose of microorganism that escape from the
source.
• Reduce the number of microorganism that may be
transferred to surfaces by touching
– Hand washing and surface pre-cleaning and desinfection
• Reduce the number of microorganism that contaminate
body or other surfaces
– Barriers (mask, gloves, and protective eyewear and clothing)
