ADVANCED OXIDATION PROCESSES APPLIED IN THE WATER TREATMENT OF THE
PETROLEUM INDUSTRY
The oil industry develops a series of activities and operations that generate problems of contamination
of production water, oil spills in fresh or salt water, which require appropriate treatment technologies.
This work includes research on advanced oxidation systems and their applicability in the oil industry.
Below are the methods of advanced oxidation where the basis of each method is described.
These processes use oxidants to reduce the COD/BOD levels, and to separate the organic components
and oxidizable inorganic components. The processes can totally oxidize organic materials such as
carbon, CO2. (Lenntech BV, 2013)
The versatility of advanced oxidation processes lies in the fact that they offer different ways of producing
hydroxyl radicals. Thus, the generation of hydroxyl radicals can be accelerated by the combination of
some oxidizing agents such as ozone, hydrogen peroxide, UV radiation, iron salts [Fe (II) and Fe (III)]
and catalysts such as titanium dioxide. (Fernández, 2007)
The advanced oxidation processes can be classified as non-photochemical processes and photochemical
processes based on the participation of light in the process. (Ripoll, 2008)
Non-photochemical processes
Ozonization
Ozonization with H2O2/O3
Fenton (Fe2+/ H2O2) and related processes
Electrochemical oxidation
