Review of Related Literature and Studies

Related Literature

This study is similarly interactions with representative of the target language and culture

impacts affective factors related to acquisition. Negative stereotypes towards learner can

affect self-esteem, result in negative attitudes regarding the target language and culture.

(Richar-Amato,2003). Motivation which has been categorized as two types- integrative the

desire to integrative members of the target language group) and instrumental (learning the

language to obtain a goal; (Gardener & Lambert, 197) also impacts acquisition. Although it

remains unclear which type may have a more positive role.(http:// www.tandofline.com)

In some cases, professor fell that international students' difficulties with English skills

negatively impact with academic performance and communication, and attribute to

segregation and ineffective work (Trice,2003). They express concerns about the

appropriateness of Tue curriculum for international students' future employment, helping

American students feel comfortable with international students, and are uncertain as to how

to address international students from lack of awareness, concern about the extra amount of

time required to work with all of them, deep appreciation of their value and considering

them a threat of funding and reputation.

Another relevant area to this study is the types of students support offered to

international students. This typically include intensive English program, which often enroll

non matriculated students and are not credit bearing. Content-based language learning

models in which students are concurrently enrolled in an ESL classes and introductory level

university courses (Snow & Kamhistein,1977) may also be used. English language support

8
may involve technology(Wu, Griffith, Wisker,Waller & Illes,2001),supplemental courses

(Beasley & Pearson,1999), or study buddies (Blakeley, 1995).

In sum, based on students and faculty reports, the English language skills of NNES affect

academic and social judgement. The stronger students' English skills, presumably, the fewer

challenges they will face in their studies. Students maybe successfu academically, despite

weakness in English, particularly if professor adjust standards and grading criteria.

Interaction in the target language and culture support acquisition, adjustment and cultural

learning. Although interaction with host country representative also cannot be equated with

intercultural learning or understanding, the latter will not occur without it.(http://

Foreign Literature

Kimura (IV) conducted a study to investigate second language listening anxiety (L2)

among university students learning English in Japan and demonstrat that the L2 listening

involves social concerns that are specific to L2 setting. Successful performance in aural

interaction presupposes mutual understanding, and L2 listeners have good reasons to

become anxious when it is doubtful whether they properly comprehend what other say. The

verbal data suggested that L2 listening anxiety was receiver-specific in that it involved

concerns over comprehending and responding appropriately to aural messages. They also

indicated that the level of L2 listening anxiety were (a) susceptible to individual difference

and (b) influenced by different social situation.(http:// www.ukessays.com.pH)

Local Literature

Go, Lucas, and Miraflores (94) conducted a study to determine the causes of anxiety in

English language learning of foreign students in the Philippines. Finding suggests that these

types of learners used vocabulary strategies to efficiently learn the English language and to

cope with their English class anxiety. Two hundred fifty foreign students were the

respondents of this study. The target participants were foreign college students taking any

courses in these institutions proved that they enrolled in any English course during the time

of the administration of the questionnaire. It has been found that the employment of this

strategy enables the learner to take charge of their own learning's as this service as their

basic aid to learn other macro skills in the target language.(http:// www.Ukessays.com.ph).
