industry. The programme, since its inception in 2006, has spawned
alumni who have demonstrated excellence in the leadership positions
that they have occupied in their organisations. The PGPEX Class of
2018 comprises an eclectic mix of youth and experience. The batch of
68 brings together nearly 8.1 years of average work experience. Under
the able guidance of the country's leading management faculty, a
passion for continuous learning synergizes with experiences from
diverse backgrounds to create an enriching learning environment.

Greetings from IIM Calcutta !


It is my pleasure to welcome you to the placement activities of our Institute, specifically for the PGPEX programme.
IIM Calcutta is the only triple accredited B-School in India. The AACSB, AMBA, EQUIS certifications have validated the institute’s
current process. They also symbolize our institutional commitment to make necessary changes to remain competitive. The
institute has been breaking in to top ranks in various ratings and surveys. These ratings endorse IIMC’s strengths and the
commitment to create high quality business managers and leaders.
We started the Post Graduate Programme for Executives (PGPEX) in 2006 with the vision of creating a high quality programme
that grooms leaders. This is the twelfth batch that you would be recruiting from. The PGPEX curriculum is synced to changing
business needs. Individual research projects, pre-work and workshop modes of teaching, live projects within a course have
been encouraged in the latest revisions.
The programme continues to select exceptional talent. The applicants need to have the potential to be groomed as leaders
to meet the requirements of challenging business environments. The chosen participants are provided an environment in
which they can sharpen their competitive edge. The quality of the candidates and the programme has been shown in nearly
1/6th of the graduates occupying C-Suite positions within five years of their graduation. The success in the industry and other
forums is also visible when the programme, on its own, continues to make it to the top ranks in several reputed B-School
rankings. Recently, for example, the Times Higher Education 2018 rated IIMC’s PGPEX 3rd among one-year MBA programmes
around the world.

Dear Recruiter,
Greetings from IIM Calcutta!
Welcome to the Placement process of Post Graduate Program for Executives (PGPEX), a one year full time General Management
Program for experienced executives offered by IIM Calcutta.
The PGPEX program aims to develop Management Talent for middle and senior level leadership positions in diverse industries.
We have been successful in that endeavor is borne out by the ready acceptance of our past 11 batches by the industry. The
students have been recruited by organizations from wide spectrum of industries ranging from Consultancy, Telecom, Projects,
IT, and ITES, Oil and Gas, and FMCG. In the past, students have been offered senior roles such asDirector, Level 5 Consultant,
Senior General Manager and so on. Our PGPEX alumni are our flag bearers who have made the programme more visible and
credible in the eyes of the outside world by their achievements in different areas they are contributing. Many of them are
already holding positions of leadership and prominence even though PGPEX is still relatively a young programme.
Since the modest begining in year 2006, we have come a long way to a stage where the world has started taking note of the
programme. We have started participating from year 2017 onwards in the annual FT MBA Global ranking. I am glad to share
that PGPEX programme ranking improved from being 95th in yr 2017 to 75th in yr 2018 in the global ranking list. We are also
proud of being the only institute in India to have triple -crown of global accreditation, and that is recognition of our PGPEX
programme as well.
It is our endeavor to keep on fine tuning the structure and content of the programme suiting to the needs of the business
environment. In recent years we have increased the number of experiential sessions, workshops, seminars, talks by senior
executives and so on. This year most of the students are involved in exciting live projectseither with start- up firms, associated
with IIMC Incubation Park, or mature firms cutting across industry spectrum. We offer a wide array of electives courses
numbering around 44 last year for students to choose from. The international immersion programme has been strengthened
by adding group project component this year.
The diversity in the batches has been increasing in the last couple of years and that is a positive sign of a maturing academic
programme. We have had in recent years students with background as diverse as lawyers, dentists, architects and defence,
apart from usual suspects- IT / ITES! This batch has students from Oil and Gas, Biopharmaceuticals, Defence, IT/ITES, Manufacturing,
automobile among others. The incoming batch has average GMAT score of 701 with highest being 750.I am confident that
after going through the profiles of these students you will be excited and eager to meet some of the students.

Dear Recruiter,
Welcome to the placement process of IIMC’s PGPEX – 12th batch. This programme has shown steady growth. The programme
is now known in the industry for its prowess to change career paths. 16% of our graduates have been able to get CXO positions
within five years of graduation. Financial Times has ranked IIMC PGPEX #9 GLOBALLY for career progression in its 2018 survey.
PGPEX is now firmly established as the catapult that sends people to leadership roles. The real value of the programme
unleashes in about two years after hiring from campus. Our returning recruiters and the confidence of ex-students are important
differentiators for IIMC’s PGPEX programme that stands out for the talent scouting opportunities across a sea of MBA
programmes.
Compared to the competition, IIM Calcutta brings in academic rigor and focus on all-round development of leadership
capabilities. Our triple-crown accreditation and membership of CEMS speak highly of academic prowess and the programme
structure. Smaller class size allows students to create strong personal bonds and have close interactions. The effect of strong
interpersonal equations at mid-career stages augurs well for the graduates and their employers. In other words, the PGPEX
graduates of IIMC continue to thrive together in a competitive landscape. We are proud that the true potential of a tightly knit
business network is therefore unlocked by this programme.
The institute provides an intense learning atmosphere, global perspective through a fully sponsored immersion programme,
live projects, and continued interactions with industry leaders in formal and informal settings.
The current batch has 66 candidates. An average profile represents a 31 year old with GMAT score of 701 and 8.3 years of experience.
The participants come from diverse industry backgrounds across manufacturing, automotive, banking, consulting, Energy/O&G
etc., making the class interactions truly vivid and enriching even for faculty colleagues.
Every batch is unique in some ways. This particular batch stands out for its zeal, energy, and a desire to do greater things in
life. They have started initiatives that will fructify over the years to come. Such maturity, long term vision, and selfless acts are
increasingly rare even in academic institutions. I am happy to witness a confident cohort of leaders of tomorrow.

About IIM Calcutta
The Indian Institute of Management Calcutta, or IIMC, was born out of a partnership between the industry and
academia, to pioneer management education and research in India. Established in 1961 by the Government of
India, in collaboration with Alfred P. Sloan School of Management (MIT), the Government of West Bengal, the Ford
Foundation and Indian industry, IIMC was the first of the prestigious Indian Institutes of Management. IIMC's rich
history of 50 years has seen it move from strength to strength, continually striving to establish new norms of
excellence, growing into an institution of global repute and a prominent member of the premier B-School
community in the Asia Pacific region. It has seen consistently high ratings in terms of recruiter perception and its
students have served as successful ambassadors in reputed firms across the world.
Set in a 135 acre picturesque campus on the outskirts of Calcutta, IIM Calcutta has always attracted the best of
students, faculty and industry partners. Over the years, the institute has evolved into a melting pot of academia,
industry & research. The campus is fully residential with state-of-the-art classrooms, seminar and conference
rooms and a 750-seat auditorium. The B. C. Roy Memorial Library is one of the largest in Asia and is recognized
by the World Bank as a regional repository of knowledge.
The campus is almost entirely Wi-Fi enabled. Internet connectivity is available to students in their own living areas
and in the classrooms and IIM Calcutta's own computing infrastructure has a wide library of software suitable for
Computer Applications in Management. Students have access to proprietary databases, BSE/NSE trading platforms
and market data from around the world.
The vision of the Institute is to be an International Centre of Excellence in all facets of Management education.
Over the past five decades, IIMC has blossomed into one of Asia's finest Business Schools. IIMC launched a one-
year full time residential programme for executives (PGPEX) in December 2006. On successful completion of the
programme, participants would be awarded a Diploma titled Post-Graduate Diploma in Management for Executives.
The mission of the PGPEX programme is to develop experienced and ambitious executives for leadership positions
in global operations.

Global Exposure
International Immersion Program in Germany
Addressing the imperatives of globaliza-
tion, the 2-week International Immersion
Program at Mannheim Business School,
Germany, helped students gain deep
and holistic insights about European
economies. Classroom lectures by
esteemed professors and company visits
helped students to understand how the
‘Mittelstand’ and ‘Hidden Champion’
companies are driving Germany’s
eminence in Europe and the world. The
professors also explained the nuances
of ‘Brexit’ on the European Union and
how such events impact the business
dynamics. Students visited three
companies i.e. Hager, Kärcher and Kleemann, met respective firm leaders and uncovered how Industry 4.0 is changing the German
industry. During the industry visits, students not only learned about the culture, best practices and innovative problem-solving
approaches but also presented insights on how their businesses can further reap benefits from Digitalization, Customer Centricity
and Blue Ocean Strategy, which was greatly appreciated. The immersion program was very enriching and it added value to the
global and cross-cultural quotient of our future business leaders.

International Immersion Program in US


Twelve students from PGPEX visited Michael G Foster School of Business, University of Washington, Seattle, USA for a 2-week
International Immersion Program on “US Business Strategy & Entrepreneurship”. The program was designed to facilitate to the
participants the necessary insights and tools required to identify business opportunities, understand business drivers, develop
effective business strategies and effectively lead large multicultural teams. The pedagogy included case-based and experiential
learning followed by relevant and unique visits to Fortune 500 companies and exciting start-ups.
The academics included sessions by world-renowned faculty on identifying business opportunities, building and testing
business models, on venture financing, on growth and exit strategies for businesses, on Leadership and Decision-making, on
Analytics, Competition and IT Strategy, on US Corporate strategy, on Disruptive innovations and on Effective pitching.
The visits to PACCAR – a Fortune 500 company that manufacturers the best quality heavy-duty trucks in the world, to Uphill
Designs – an apparel start-up that has transitioned to a fashion firm, to Amazon’s state-of-art fulfilment centre that uses
advanced robotics and warehouse-
management systems powered by
high-tech data processing and to
Boeing – the pioneering air-plane
maker, were unforgettable experi-
ences for the students and gave them
unique perspectives on global
business strategies across multiple
industries and across a wide spectrum
of companies.
The group also had the opportunity
tonetwork with Technology Manage-
ment MBA students of Foster school
of Business and gained interesting
insights into the technology environ-
ment. In between the acade-mics and
visits, the students also had the
chance to explore the beautiful

emerald city of Seattle along with its unique monuments and the natural wonders of the State of Washington. The students
also enhanced their personal experiences by creating life-long memories while indulging in mountain treks, sky-diving, whale-
watching and other cultural expeditions.
The program broadened the students perspectives and augmented their business skills that were honed during the regular
PGPEX program coursework at IIMC, thereby providing the students with a holistic learning experience necessary to straddle
global business leadership positions in the future.

International Immersion Program in UK


This year, 20 students from PGPEX visited Strathclyde Business School, University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, UK for a 2-week
International Immersion Program. The program is designed to provide participants an opportunity to understand business
drivers in different economies, how various industries have evolved and the cultures in which these industries operate.
The program commenced with a workshop conducted by Prof. Ian Wooton of the Fraser of Allandar Institute, a leading
independent economic research institute focused on the Scottish economy, on Brexit and the trade challenges that lie ahead
for the UK in a post-Brexit world. During the two weeks at Strathclyde, students had the opportunity to interact with senior
professors from Strathclyde and discuss areas such as Strategy, Fintech, Risk Management, Digital Marketing, Supply chain
management, etc. Prof. Phil Taylor conducted an excellent session on the impact of automation on business services in a
global delivery setup where we discussed various service delivery models and the probable effect of automation on jobs not
only in India and UK but across the globe.
Visits to various businesses complemented the classroom sessions. Students had the opportunity to visit Scottish Power
headquarters to learn about the IT transformation the organization is going through. The group was treated to a boardroom
experience at the Royal Bank of Scotland headquarters in Edinburgh and discovered how the organization has evolved post
the 2008 economic crisis. The icing on the cake was a visit to Will Grant & Sons – the home of “Glenfiddich” - to nose the various
whiskeys and to see the bottling lines in operation.
The students also visited Technology and Innovation Centre of the University as well as the Strathclyde Enterprise Hub, where
they interacted with the budding entrepreneurs who shared new business ideas and sought insights from the participants
on how to build on their businesses. The group interacted with Strathclyde Alumni and Strathclyde Business Fellows during
the networking event to discuss the business environment in the UK. In between the study tours/visits, students also had the
chance to explore the culture and history of Scotland on their visit to the Edinburgh Festival and a day-tour of Loch Lomond,
Stirling Castle and Glengoyne Whisky Distillery.
The International Immersion in all proved to be a great learning experience, one that added new paradigms to the student’s
thought process and improved understanding of business operations in a global setting.

Management Centre for Human Values (MCHV)
IIM Calcutta has a vision to emerge as an international centre of management education with its foundation on Indian ethos
and values. Management Centre for Human Values is a significant milestone in achieving this vision and holds up to humankind
contemporary adaptations from the perennial and vibrant corpus of Indian philosophical wisdom. The centre offers courses
in Business Ethics, Value-based Leadership, NGO Management, Corporate Social Responsibility and also conducts short
duration Management Development Programmes and In-Company Programmes, and Workshop on these themes besides

The Centre for Entrepreneurship and Innovation (CEI) at IIM Calcutta is an initiative to achieve greater understanding and
analysis of these areas and to stimulate their development for societal benefit. CEI's vision is to grow as a program of international
renown, where students, faculty, alumni, industry and policy makers collaborate, learn and innovate. CEI is involved in
entrepreneurial research and case development in collaboration with industry, to support creation of new ventures and

Innovation Park (IIP)


IIM Calcutta's efforts towards promoting Entrepreneurship and creating an eco-system to nurture start-ups has got a fillip
recently as it has incorporated on 22 August 2014 a not-for-profit company, called IIM Calcutta Innovation Park (IIP) as a section
8 company under the Companies Act 2013. The main objective of this newly formed company is to promote start-ups in five
broad areas - healthcare, education, clean technology, lifestyle and analytics. The newly formed company has planned to raise
seed fund to the tune of Rs.10 - 20 crore from our alumni to provide initial seed money to the start-ups incubated at IIM
Calcutta.

Financial Research and Trading Lab


The Financial Research and Trading Lab (the Finance Lab) at IIM Calcutta was set up in November 2008 to undertake cutting
edge research on financial markets using real time high frequency data from financial markets of India and around the world.
The Finance Lab uses a simulator to simulate trading in financial markets using actual prices. In 2011, there was a grant from
the Union Finance Ministry of Rs. 20 crore. The Lab has since augmented its physical infrastructure and procured international
databases & softwares. The Lab has over a dozen Bloomberg terminals and over 78 terminals. The terminals are loaded with
a trading simulator and contain data from six markets NSE- Cash and F&O BSE-Cash, NCDEX, MCX and Currency futures.
