Specifications

NOTICE
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during
performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair
of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers
before opening any compartment or disassembling any component
containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool

Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on
Cat products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Note: To check the steering time, park the machine on a dry, hard, level surface.

Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "System Pressure Release".

Steering Time -Check

Note: To check the steering time, park the machine on a dry, hard, level surface. Permit only one operator on the machine. Keep all other personnel away from the
machine.

With the engine at high idle, the steering time on a 988K Wheel Loader, for a full turn from stop to stop should be 3.4 ± 0.3 seconds. With the engine at low idle,
the steering time for a full turn from stop to stop should be 5.6 ± 0.9 seconds.

With the engine at high idle, the steering time on a 836K Landfill Compactor for a full turn from stop to stop should be 3.9 ± 0.8 seconds. With the engine at low
idle, the steering time for a full turn from stop to stop should be 6.4 ± 1.0 seconds.

With the engine at high idle, the steering time on a 834K Wheel Dozer, for a full turn from stop to stop should be 3.1 ± 0.3 seconds. With the engine at low idle, the
steering time for a full turn from stop to stop should be 5.7 ± 0.9 seconds.

When the service brakes are not applied, the difference between the steering time for a right turn and the steering time for a left turn must not be more than 0.3
second. When the service brakes are applied, the steering time must not increase by more than 0.2 second.

If the difference between the steering time for a full right turn and the steering time for a full left turn is more than 0.3 second, use the "Steering Time - Adjust"
procedure to adjust the steering time:

Steering Control Valve
(1) Control valve spool. (2) Flow balance shims. (3) Springs. (4) Pilot oil port.

1. Remove the fittings from pilot oil port (4) of the steering control valve.

2. To achieve a faster right turn and a slower left turn, add flow balance shims (2).

3. To achieve a faster left turn and a slower right turn, remove flow balance shims (2).

4. If you have slow turns in both directions at high idle, add 4B-4278 Washers (5) behind the spring.

5. The thickness of each 2J-2866 Shim is 0.25 mm (0.010 inch). The thickness of each 4T-4628 Shim is 0.50 mm (0.020 inch). Two shims (one shim of each
thickness) will change the steering times at high idle by approximately 0.1 second.

6. Install the fittings and the line to pilot oil port (4).
