CHAPTER 1. INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background

English is one of the international languages that is used as an official


language by the United Nation and many international organizations. Mihaballo et
al (2013) stated that English is used by 53 countries and 10 international
organizations as the official language. It shows that English is used as the
communication tool by many people in any kind of fields such as health,
economics, business, and education.

In the educational field, there is a lot of important information that is only


provided in English such as books and journals. In reality, not all people can
understand English well because they do not use English in their daily life. This
problem usually occurs in the countries which place English as the foreign
language such as Indonesia, Thailand, Myanmar, and Vietnam. So that, translation
is needed to help them understand the information from those kinds of sources
that are only provided in English.

In Politeknik Negeri Jember, a vocational college in Indonesia, some lecturers


use textbooks or journals that are written in English as the learning materials.
Based on the interview with a lecturer of Animal Husbandry Department in
Politeknik Negeri Jember, the writer has found that there is a textbook in the
English version that he used as the materials in the learning process. The lecturer
uses this textbook because it provides complete information related to the learning
process. Not only interviewing the lecturer, but the writer also interviewing the
students of Animal Husbandry Department. As the result, the students need
Indonesian version of the book because they can not understand well the English
version.

Translating the book from English into Bahasa Indonesia is needed by the
students of Animal Husbandry Department. They need the Indonesian version to
make them easier understanding the book. Some parts of the book have been
taken by the students of English study program 2015 as their final project.
However, there are some parts that have not been translated yet. So, the writer
decides to translate the rest of the book. The writer will translate a book entitled
“Quality Assurance for Animal Feed Analysis Laboratories” for the Animal
Husbandry Department focusing on page 148-162.

1.2 Objective

The objective of this final project is to translate a book entitled “Quality


Assurance for Animal Feed Analysis Laboratories” into Bahasa Indonesia for the
students and lectures in the Animal Husbandry Department. This project will be
done by the teamwork between three students which each of them will translate
fifteen pages so that the writer will translate a part of this book on page 147 until
162.

1.3 Significances
This final project will be beneficial for the following parties:
1.3.1 For The Animal Husbandry Department

The result of this final project will be useful for the lecturer of Animal
Husbandry Department in teaching-learning process and will be able to help the
students of Animal Husbandry Department in understanding the book because the
product will exist in Indonesian version.

1.3.2 For The Writer of This Final Project

By finishing this final project, the writer will be able to apply her skill in
reading, writing, translation, and computer.

1.3.3 For The Students of English Study Program

This final project can be a reference for the next student of English Study
Program who will make a translation product as their final project.
CHAPTER 2. REVIEW OF LITERATURE

This chapter discusses the theories which are related to the process of
finishing this project. There are two points that explained as follow: development
of translation and translation method.

2.1 The Development of Translation

Suyono and Hariono (2014) stated that there are some aspects that affect
the development of translation. The most affecting aspects are economic
globalization, development of information technology and digitizing. Economic
globalization caused a company to want to be involved in global business. For that
reason, the company needs to publish a website in the language where the
company will operate, to publish the document of the product in the language of
the target market, etc. It means that translation can be an alternative to break the
gap in global businesses. Development of information technology has influenced
the form of text and how the text should be translated. The last is, by the existence
of digitizing, people can access many kinds of references from their computer. It
is also related to the development of information technology. By digitizing, a
translator may open many kinds of dictionaries in the short time.

According to Alim (2017), translation has become a course that should be


learned in an English study program in some of the colleges in Indonesia. It is
based on some experts who believed that translation skill is an important skill that
should be mastered by the students of the English study program. It shows us how
important the translation skill in this era.

From the explanation above, the writer concludes that translation has
developed in such a way so it is needed by many people, especially in some
countries that place English as the foreign language, in many aspects. They need

translation to break the limit in understanding information which is only provided


in English. They need translation in order to be involved in the globalization era.

2.2 Translation Method

A translation project needs the proper procedures to be applied in the


process of translation. Before determining the procedures that will be used, the
translator has to understand what type of text that will be translated. It is
important because each type of text has the different technique in translation.

Reiss (1976) in Munday (2008) propose specific translation methods


according to text type. The methods can be described as follows :

1. The TT (target text) of an informative text should transfer the full


referential and conceptual content of the ST (source text). The translation
should be plain prose, without redundancy and leaving no doubt about the
meaning.
2. The TT of an expressive text should transfer the artistic form of the ST.
The translation should identify the method that suitable with the
perspective of the ST author.
3. The TT of an operative text should create the wanted reaction in the TT
receiver. The translation should use the adaptive method and create an
equivalent effect among TT readers.

To be able to transfer the meaning from the source text into the target text,
the translator needs to understand the steps of the translation process. Based
on the Oxford Dictionary fourth edition, a process is a series of things that are
done in order to achieve something. From the definition of a process, we can
conclude that the translation process is a series of things that are done in order
to translate a text.

Bathgate (1981) in Widyamartaya (1989) divided the translation process


into seven phases.

1) Tuning
In this step, the translator may get understanding about the context of the
book and the style language that was used by the author. From this step,
the translator can decide the diction and the arrangement of the phrase that
will be used.
2) Analysis
In this step, the translator should analyze every sentence of the source
language. The translator should also connect the elements of the book in
order to determine the consistency of his translation.
3) Understanding
In this step, the translator is expected to understand the whole idea of the
book that will be translated. The translator should understand the main
idea and also the supporting ideas of the book.
4) Terminology
In this step, the translator thinks about the appropriate expression from the
target language that can reflect the expression in the source language.
5) Restructuring
In this step, the translator rearranges all that she has done in the fourth
step. The translator is expected to follow the style language of the author.
6) Checking
In this step, the translator rechecks the first translation and note the
mistakes. Then, the translator revises the mistakes and make sure that the
translation has been correct and appropriate in the situation.
7) Discussion
In this step, the translator discusses the result of her translation with some
expert to avoid the possibility of deviation from the real meaning.

The other translation process that was proposed by Banjar (2009) consists
of three phases.

1) Analysis of the source text

There are several steps that may be done by the translator in this phase.
Those are the general reading of the source text, underlining the difficult
words, looking up the difficult words in the dictionary, and close reading
of the source text after understanding the difficult words.
2) Transfer of the text into the target language
In this phase, the translator focuses to make a draft translation by doing
some steps those are writing a draft translation of the text in the target
language, paying special attention to the grammar and spelling of the
target text, including all the details mentioned in the source text, and trying
to make the target text as original as possible and sound natural not
translated.
3) Revision of the translation
The purpose of this phase is to get a correct and final translation as a target
text. Some activities that should be done in this phase make sure that all
the details of the source text are found in the target text, check the spelling
and grammar of the target text, try to make the translated version sounds
natural in its target language form, and read the translation after finishing
the corrections without referring to the source text to highlight the
naturalness of the target text.
The translation process from Bathgate and Banjar actually are
almost the same. The first phase until the third phase from Bathgate has
the same idea with the first phase from Banjar. The fourth and the fifth
phase from Bathgate are the same with the second phase from Banjar. The
sixth phase from Bathgate has the same purpose as the third phase from
Banjar. The last phase from Bathgate is the only phase that makes them
different because Banjar does not propose a phase to discussing the
translation with the experts.
CHAPTER 3. METHODS

This chapter explains the methods that will be used by the writer in
conducting this final project. It includes the source of translation, duration of the
project, short description of the product and the procedures that used by the writer
in the translation process.

3.1 Source of Translation


The detail information of the translation source can be seen in this table.

3.2 Duration of The Project


This final project will be done in seven months, it was started from August
2018 and will be finished in February 2019.

3.3 Short Description of The Product


The product of this final project is the Indonesian version from an English
book in the field of Animal Husbandry Department entitled Quality Assurance for
Animal Feed Analysis Laboratories. This final project only focuses on translating
some part of the book that has not translated yet by the student of English Study
Program 2015. In this final project, the writer only focuses on part II Analytical
section on page 148 until 162. When all part of this book is completely translated,
the product will be available in a pdf format.

3.4 The Process of Translation


There are two kinds of the translation process in chapter 2. The writer decides
to use the translation process by Bathgate (1981) that consist of seven phases
because it is more technical than the process that is proposed by Banjar.
The first phase is tuning. In this phase, the translator read the text intensively
to get an understanding of the context of the text and the style language that was
used by the author. This phase let the translator to decides the chosen words or
phrases and sentences that equivalent to the source text. While doing this phase,
the writer need some tools those are the print out of the source text, a note and a
pen.
The second phase is analysis. After deciding the chosen words or phrases and
sentences that equivalent to the source text, the translator analyzes every sentence
of the source text. In this phase, the translator will break down each sentence in
the source text into words or phrases. Then the translator establishes the syntactic
relation between the various elements of the sentence. In this phase, the translator
will focus on the grammatical structure of the source text so she can find the
relationship between elements in the larger portion of the text to get the

consistency in the translation. The writer will write the result of the analysis on
her own note.
The third phase is understanding. In this phase, the translator tries to
understand the whole idea of the text that will be translated. By doing this phase,
the translator will get the main idea and the supporting ideas of the text and she
will write it on her note.
The fourth phase is terminology. In this phase, the translator thinks about the
appropriate expression in the target text that can reflect the expression in the
source text that has been analyzed in the second phase. The word that is used by
the translator should be acceptable by the reader of the target text.
The fifth phase is restructuring. In this step, the translator makes a translation
draft from all what she has done from the first until the fourth phase. The
translator should use the same style as the author of the source text used.
The sixth phase is checking. After making a translation draft, the translator
will check the draft and note the mistakes. Then the translator revises the mistakes
and makes sure that the translation has been correct and appropriate with the
context. The outcome of this phase will be the result of translation that will be
given to the experts to be discussed.
The last phase is a discussion. In the last phase, the translator will discuss the
result of her translation with some experts to avoid the possibility of deviation
from the real meaning. The experts, in this case, are the supervisor of the writer
and the lecturer of Animal Husbandry Department. While discussing the result of
the writer’s translation, the experts will give feedback to the writer in some
aspects such as the diction, the sentence structure and the relevancy of the
translation result. The outcome of the discussion will be the final translation.
