of the lubricant.
14
Product Description, Mechanical Face Seal
Purpose The mechanical face seal is devised to isolate the motor, bearings and electrical parts of
the drive unit from the surrounding media.
Description The ITT Flygt seal system is based on a double seal arrangement with an intermediate
buffer cavity (seal housing filled with oil) in between.
The mechanical face seal consists of one stationary and one rotating seal ring that are
factoryassembled as a unit. The seal faces are protected from any dirt and solids that
could cause leakage.
The seal unit has a bidirectional mechanical torque transmission from the shaft by a
drive notch fitted in to the drive slot in the shaft. Internally, the seal unit relies only on
mechanical torque locks and torque transmission. The stationary seal ring is secured
by Oring friction to the bearing housing.
15
Product Description, Mechanical Face Seal
Illustration: This illustration shows where the mechanical face seal is located.
Seal
placement 1
Controlled The mechanical face seal is designed to work on the controlled leakage principle where a
leakage minimal amount of oil/media is allowed to enter the space between the seal rings. This
principle creates a hydrodynamic film, which lubricates the seal faces.
In case of leakage through the outer seal, the liquid will enter the seal housing. Depending
on the type of oil that is used in the seal housing the liquid can be detected either by
the emulsion it creates or by the fact that it collects at the bottom of the seal housing,
separated from the oil.
Handling seals The seal faces in the seal unit are in contact with each other at all times and shall not be
at service disassembled.
If the mechanical seal unit is removed from the product, it must be replaced by a new
one. The new seal unit is easy to mount without risk of contamination of seal faces or
misalignment of seal rings. The seals smooth exterior makes it resistant to wear and
clogging.
16

Product Description, Jet ring and Vortex shield
Introduction The product may be equipped with a jet ring and vortex shield.
It should be noted that the power could be up to 20 % lower for a propeller operating
with a jet ring.
Purpose The jet ring directs the mixer jet and improves the efficiency.
The vortex shield is for use in applications where the liquid depth is very shallow or where
the product may be placed close to the surface.
Illustration This illustration shows the mixer alternatives with jet ring and vortex shield.
21
Product Description, Jet ring and Vortex shield
Jet ring The jet ring reduces losses related to the change of flow direction, as well as losses
from blade tip recirculation.
Using a jet ring results in an efficiency increase of 10–15 % in water and even more in
viscous media.
Use:
A jet ring is recommended when there is a need to
• improve capacity and hydraulic efficiency
• maintain the capacity in viscous liquids and consistency media
• protect the propeller or
• avoid vortex
Don’t use:
A jet ring is not recommended to be used when
• a large throughlet is required
• mechanical work on surface crust (high shear) is needed
• the entrance opening is too small for the jet ring
• operating in small tanks with high turbulence inflow to the mixer
• the price of the jet ring is not in proportion to its benefits or
• when there is risk for clogging.
Vortex shield A vortex shield may be used to prevent air vortices to be drawn from the surface into the
propeller, which may cause damage to the propeller and a drop in performance.

Product Description, Seal flushing
Seal flushing
Description The purpose of seal flushing is to prevent very fine particles (smaller particles than the
liquid film between the surfaces of the mechanical seal) from penetrating past the outer
seal.
The flushing media can be
• water or
• air.
Other flushing media can be used provided that the materials in the hub area can
withstand the media.
Principle: The flushing media is connected to an inlet pipe. The lip seal that seals against
the propeller hub, opens for inner pressure and is designed to allow the flushing media
to disappear.
1. Inlet pipe
2. Lip seal
3. Shaft seal
Recommended This table gives an overview of recommended flow for continuous flushing.
flow Flow media Minimum Maximum
liter/min liter/min
Water 0.5
Air 10 20
If the flow is lower than the minimum value recommended there may be problems with
clogging and wornout seal ring in the propeller hub.
If the air flow is greater than the maximum value the mixing process will be disturbed.

Product Description, Cooling jacket
Cooling jacket
Description The flange mounted mixer may be equipped with a cooling jacket. Normally the stator
is cooled by the surrounding liquid. In some cases the cooling has to be external with a
cooling jacket.
If the cooling jacket option is used at liquid temperatures over +40 °C (104 °F), there
are no warm liquid motor power limitations.
Principle: Pipes and couplings are connected between the cooling jacket and the fixing
plate. Cooling water enters through the fixing plate at the connection, see illustration.
For easy handling, the seal flushing hole may be equipped with hydraulic coupling or
coupling with hose clamps.
Unused holes in the fixing plate will be provided with conical plugs from the factory.

Product Data, Material characteristics
Material characteristics
ASTM 304 Stainless steel 304 possesses a good combination of strength, corrosion resistance and
fabricability.
ASTM 316L The stainless steel ASTM 316L is an austenitic steel with good corrosion resistance in
general. Due to the addition of molybden, its sensitivity to pitting and crevise corrosion is
lower than for many other austenitic steels.
ASTM 316L is resistant in many solutions at high concentration and temperatures, for
example:
• Citric acids
• Phosphoric acids
• Lactic acids
• Nitric acids
HiChrome Hichrome is an extremely abrasionresistant alloy, but with limited corrosion resistance
(Cast iron) capabilities. The material is recommended when mixing hard mineral slurries.
