Activity : 7.4
Aim : To show that heat causes solids to expand and
contract.
Diagram :

Procedure:
1. The metal ball is put through the metal ring as shown in figure 7.6.
2. The ball is took out and heated for five minutes with Bunsen
burner. The ball is tried to put trough the ring again.
3. The ball is let to cool down. The ball is tried again to put through
the ring.
Observation:

 Can the metal ball go through the ring after it

has been heated up? Why?

After the metal ball has being heated up, the

ball cannot go through the ring, because metal
is (expand contract) when it is heated.

 Can the metal ball go through the ring after it

has cooled down? Why?
The metal ball can go through the ring after it
has cooled down, because metal is (contract,
expand) when it has cooled.

Conclusion:
What conclusion can you make from this activity?
Metal solids expand when it is heated and it
contracts when it is cooled.
Discussion:
1. What happens to the volume of the metal ball
when it is heated?
The volume of the metal ball increases.

2. What happens to the volume of the metal ball

when it is cooled?
The volume of the metal ball decreases.
