How to Insert Flash into your

PowerPoint Presentation
• You can only insert .swf files
• You should create a folder on your desktop
that contains your PowerPoint document and
the .swf file. i.e., C:\Documents and
Settings\computer name\Desktop\file
name.swf
• Remember the path – you will need it later
• On the “Developer” tab, go to “Controls” group
• Click the icon of hammer and nail for “More
Controls”
• On the “More Controls” window scroll down and select
“Shockwave Flash Object” in the list
• Click “OK” at the bottom
• You will get a “+” on your screen. Position it on the
slide, hold down the left mouse and make a shape which
your flash will be positioned in (can be resized later)
• Right click the control (box) you draw
• Click “Properties” in the right-click menu
• Go to the “Properties” window
• On the alphabetic tab, click the
“Movie” property
• Type the full drive path in the
value column (the blank cell next
to Movie), i.e., C\:a.swf)
• To make the Flash play
automatically when the slide is
displayed, set the “Playing”
property to “True“
• To embed the Flash into
PowerPoint, set “Embed Movie”
property to “True” (it doesn’t truly
embed - more on that later)
• Finally close the “Properties” window and
save your presentation

• NOTE: You cannot view the .swf file until you

go to slide show
FYI
• The file doesn’t truly embed so if you are going to play
the PowerPoint file with the flash inserted onto another
computer, you must change the path name in the
Properties dialogue box on the flash slide
– Copy the folder (with your deck and the .swf file) onto
the computer
– Right click on the drawn object
– Select “Properties”
– Replace the computer name with the new computer name.
C:\Documents and Settings\ computer name\Desktop\file
name.swf. Everything else should remain the same
– You should also double-check that “Playing” is set to “True”
(It sometimes reverts back to false)
