Assignment 5
Due date: February 28, 2019

ONE
A donut-like channel is moving on the ground with acceleration a. Point mass P can move inside
the channel without friction. Find the EOM of P using the torque / angular momentum method.

2
TWO
There are two rotating arms with equivalent length. The end of the second arm can move in a
horizontal channel freely. There is a point mass P attached to the end of the second arm with a
non-stretchable string. q1 (t) is known. Find the equation of motion of point mass P .

3
THREE

Point mass P2 can move inside of a quarter-circular channel without friction. Another point mass
P1 is attached to P2 through a tentioned massless string. Find the EOMs of the system.

4
FOUR – Matlab
Consider the Equation of Motion of a simple pendulum and the following initial conditions:
L + g sin  = 0
 (0) = 0.1
 (0) = 0

Assume L=1 m, and g=10 m/s2. Use ODE45 in Matlab and solve this EOM. Refer to the in-class
discussion on re-writing this equation in terms of a set of first order ODEs.

1. Plot  (t ) versus time

2. Plot  (t ) versus time
3. Use  (t ) and find its derivative with respect to time. Plot that on top of the plot of  (t )
from ODE45 using a different symbol and make sure that they are the same.

5
FIVE (with solution)
Collar A is free to slide with negligible friction on the circular guide mounted in the vertical
frame. Find the EOM of collar A if the frame is given a constant horizontal acceleration a to the
right. Using the Angular Momentum method.

Solutions:

Newton’s 2nd Law:

7
SIX (with solution)
Particle P is sliding along a circular path of radius r. The circular path is placed on top of a truck
that is moving to the left with a velocity of v and an acceleration of a. The friction is negligible.
