1. GENERAL
1.1 Scope
This specification establishes Vendor’s responsibility with regard to guaranteeing noise level limits in the plant
constructed by Purchaser.
1.2.1 The following ANSI (American National Standards Institute) and JIS (Japanese Industrial Standards) standards
shall be complied with.
(1) ANSI
(2) JIS
JIS Z 8731-1983 - Methods of Measurement and Description of A-weighted Sound Pressure Level
JIS C 1502-1990 - Sound Level Meters
JIS C 1505-1988 - Precision Sound Level Meters
1.3 Definitions
(1) Decibel (dB) is a unit expressed as 10 times the logarithm (to the base of 10) of the ratio of two related
quantities proportional to power.
(2) Sound pressure (P) is a periodic fluctuation of pressure about atmospheric pressure in the presence of a sound
wave.
P
(3) Sound pressure level SPL = 20 Log dB applicable to air at 20 °C and one atmosphere where P is sound
Po
pressure and Po is a reference pressure of 2 x 10-5 Newtons per square meter.
(4) Sound power (WA) is the total sound energy radiated by noise source, in watts.
WA
(5) Sound power level (PWL) = 10 Log dB where WA is sound power and Wo is a reference power of
Wo
10-12 watt.
(6) dB(A) is a unit of sound level which is a logarithmic summation of a spectrum whose SPL values have been
weighted in a manner corresponding to a 40 phone equal loudness contour for pure tones.
(7) A band is a range of frequencies determined by the highest and the lowest frequencies in the range.
Frequencies are measured in Hertz.
(8) An octave is a band in which the highest frequency is twice the lowest frequency.
(1) Equipment noise level limits corresponding to equipment group specified in Table 1 shall not be exceeded.
Equipment group and measurement location for each equipment are indicated in Table 2. In case that the
package unit will be supplied by Vendor, each equipment of the package shall comply with equipment noise
level limits in this section.
(2) When equipment is supplied with gear unit, equipment noise level limit shall be applied to the combined noise
level for equipment and gear unit.
(3) Vendor shall specify noise level of standard design for each equipment in the “DATA SHEET-EQUIPMENT
NOISE LEVEL” (hereinafter referred to as DATA SHEET)”. Whenever the sound pressure level of Vendor’s
standard equipment exceeds the limit specified in Table 2, the following information shall be filled in the
“DATA SHEET”.
(4) Vendor shall specify vendor’s guaranteed noise level for each equipment in the “DATA SHEET”.
(5) Whenever the noise level reduction cannot be practically achieved by the equipment, Vendor shall describe the
problem and recommend alternatives.
(1) Vendor shall state expected noise level and guaranteed noise level
in the “DATA SHEET”.
Pump A - ditto -
Motor A - ditto -
Agitator (including driver) B - ditto -
Fired Heater B (a) 1 meter from the boundary surface under the floor
Control Valve B 1 meter downstream of the valve and 1 meter from the
pipe
3. NOISE TEST
3.1.1 A noise level test shall be made prior to shipment in accordance with this section.
3.1.2 Sound pressure level in octave bands and overall noise level in dB(A) shall be measured. Measurements shall be
taken at a minimum of four positions spaced equally around the equipment.
3.1.3 Where the variation in SPL measurements is greater than 5 dB, additional measurements shall be made to define
the directivity.
3.1.4 The placement of the instruments during the test shall be such as to avoid the influences of air currents,
vibrations, electrical or magnetic field, and other extraneous factors which tend to alter the readings.
3.1.5 Noise tests shall be performed in an area where background noise levels and reverberant effects are low.
3.1.7 If the background noise levels are between 3 and 9 dB below test levels, corrections to test data shall be made to
account for background noise. The recommended correction values are indicated in the “EQUIPMENT NOISE
TEST REPORT” attached to this specification.
3.1.8 No valid measurements can be made when the background noise is 3 dB or less below measurement test levels.
3.1.9 Noise tests shall be performed with the equipment operating at rated speed and rated horsepower. If this
operating condition cannot be obtained, then noise tests may be performed at some other condition mutually
agreed upon by Purchaser and Vendor.
3.2 Instruments
3.2.1 A sound level meter as specified in ANSI S1.4 or equivalent is to be used to measure overall noise level in dB(A).
3.2.2 An octave band analyzer as specified in ANSI S1.11 or equivalent is to be used to measure sound pressure level
in octave bands.
3.2.3 Instruments shall be calibrated as recommended by the instrument manufacturer. Overall calibration of the
instruments, including the microphone and internal calibration of the meters, shall be made before and after the
measurement test of each piece of equipment.
4. DOCUMENTS
(1) Vendor shall submit the “DATA SHEET-EQUIPMENT NOISE LEVEL” completed at the vendor’s proposal
and after receipt of purchase order. Vendor shall provide the sound pressure level in octave bands and dB(A)
of the equipment at the location specified in Section 2.
(2) Vendor shall submit the “EQUIPMENT NOISE TEST REPORT” attached to this specification as well as a
complete description of the test facilities and sketch of test arrangement showing microphone locations after
shop test. If the test condition is different from the operation condition, Vendor shall clearly describe the test
condition.
