Chapter 1: Background of the Study

1.1 Introduction

One of the purposes of music is to give and allow the people’s central virtue to express

their feelings, emotions, motivations and helps people mood control. Also, music is a way to

communicate feelings or relay a message to other persons and speaks to people’s inner being

(Greenberg, 2016). Music is a compilation of coordinated sound of sounds. It is the process Commented [GPF1]: Improve it more!

where sounds and tones are placed to create a composition. Sounds and vibrations make

music, it doesn’t have to be amusing and perfect, but it should convey one’s whole range of

experience, environment and motivations (Przybylek, n.d.). Hence, in every country there’s a

different uniqueness of culture of music that they use to represent their country.

Original Pilipino music or commonly known as OPM are Original Philippine songs that

vary from a different tradition to modern original music compositions. Original song that are

composed and sang by Filipino singers and composers. These songs are written in different

various genres and styles that been mixed with influence of music from Asia and Western

countries. Moreover, here in the Philippines, traditional Filipino songs include the folk songs,

harana or the courtship songs, and the kundiman or the lyrical kind of songs, these kinds of

songs and music is guided by instruments such as gongs or strings instruments played by a

musician. The modern Filipino music includes the different multitude of song genre to pop, rock,

or ballad. In modern Filipino music, it produces a lot of artists that have become as the iconic,

idols and legend in the OPM industries (Original Pilipino Music, 2016). Thus, the Filipino

traditional and modern music is different from others which contributed to the culture of the

Philippines and is currently used as a talent in the music industry.

Today’s OPM is mainly based and focused on the Luzon music or songs and artists,

and somehow, the international song is mainstream in the music industry of the Philippines.

With that, local artists in the Mindanao area are being neglected and not given such chances

in the music industry. Thus, causing local artists in Mindanao lack confidence to expose and

showcase their music and song to the music industry of the Philippines due to the pressure of

International and Luzon based music. As a result, this generation overlooks the essence and

beauty of the culture of Mindanao music.

This study will cater the Mindanao artists to expose their skills and talents in the

development to express the culture of Mindanao music to the music industry of the Philippines.

Making the local artists in Mindanao as a priority to the development to be able to uplift the

culture of their music and to be able to give opportunities to the local artists in the music

industry. With the Informative design approach, it will be able to guide the audience in the

development with users to achieve communication objectives such as informing, influencing

and motivating. Also, it will link and present new information to the audience and offer a

meaningful nonverbal information and clues to enhance the audience understanding towards

the essence and importance of Mindanao Music (Lipton, 2007).

With that, the local artists in Mindanao will gain confidence to present their original

music and gain respect to the music industry. Thus, giving opportunities to the local artists to

showcase their skills, to introduce their culture, and exhibit their products. Also, it will allow

people to understand more about the culture of their music and arts and to encourage people

to interact with the culture of the Mindanao music and accept their music to the community.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Artists, singers, and composers are the ones who make, represents, and formulate

music and song into arts, making it as a hobby and somehow their occupation in their lives. In

the Philippines, people most played and listened to music and songs of international and Luzon

based music. However, there is still some Visayan and Mindanaoan music that being played,

but somehow people don't understand the lyrics because of the language of the music, making

their music and songs won’t be able to explicit to the music industry.

With that situation, some of Mindanao artists lack opportunities to be heard into the

music industry; by that, artists usually tend to stop and ignore their passion for expressing their

selves in music. The issue concern to the Mindanao artists and its Mindanao original music not

being recognized and given a chance to the music industry of the Philippines, making people

forget the essence in the culture of Mindanao music. Thus, even the people in Mindanao are

not aware, won’t appreciate the Mindanao artist and music, making their culture of music

diminish.

Therefore, with the help of Informative design approach to the Mindanao music, it will

uplift the culture of Mindanao music and give opportunities to the Mindanao local artist to

promote and expose their skill and talents. With these assertions, there are several questions

that needed to be answered:

 Why is it needed to expose the Mindanao original music to the music

industry?

 How can Informative design strategies achieve the communication

objective such us informing, influencing and motivating?

 How will the Informative design strategies can effectively expose the

Mindanao Original music?

 What are the considerations on planning and designing a music and

arts performing center?

 How will the audience distinguish Mindanao Music from other

Philippines Music?

1.3 Goals and Objectives

This study sought to present the culture of Mindanao music, recognize and be able to

give a chance to the Mindanao artist to expose their music to the music industry of the

Philippines and focusing and giving priority to the Mindanao artists to the development. Also, it

will be the steppingstones of the local artist to bring back their hobby and make it as an

occupation and be able to help them revive the essence of Mindanao Original Music. Thus,

giving opportunities to the local artists and regain the respect of their music.

Furthermore, the study will motivate the audiences and users to interact with the

culture of Mindanao music and be able to encourage and motivates them to accept Mindanao

music in the industry. Thus, with the development, it will allow and nurture the culture of the

Mindanao music to be passed on to the next generations.

To achieve this goal, this study will focus on the following objectives:

 To present the importance and essence of the Mindanao Original

Music and its culture to the people.

 To formulate an architectural solution and schemes that will support

and guide the communication objectives.

 To determine and provide the lapses and needs of the local artist to

expose their music to the locals.

 To use the informative design strategies in interacting to the users, by

achieving the communication objectives.

 To be able to nurture the Mindanao Original Music in the music

industry.

 To focus and prioritizing the music and arts of the Mindanao artist to

the development.

 To distinguish the Mindanao music to other local music by the help of

informative design strategies.

The studies vision is to expose the culture of Mindanao Original Music to the

people and give opportunities to the local artist to present their music, skills and talents

to the music industry. Thus, due to the downfall of the Mindanao original music and its

culture, people nowadays tend to forget the beauty of arts and culture of the Mindanao

Music. Therefore, this study will help the local artist to expose and revive the beauty of

arts and culture of Mindanao music to the music industry with the guide of informative

design strategies to achieve the communications objectives.

The research framework presented above shows the idea and strategies that

will affect and help the proposal. Each variable varies in their different uses to the

development, it will guide and help the study answer the problems of the study.

Mindanao Original music and its factors create a development that which local artist

will regain the beauty of arts and culture of their music. Thus, the Informative design

strategies and its factors create a development that will achieve the communication

objectives such as informing, influencing and motivating the users to the study.

1.5 Assumptions

With the formulated Informative design strategies in the study of exposing Mindanao

original music, the proposal assumes the local artist will regain the beauty of arts and culture

of the Mindanao music in the music industry of the Philippines. With this proposal, it will help

the tourism of Davao city and be able to expand the information of Mindanao music and relay

it to the community. Furthermore, it assumes that the local government unit (LGU) will operate

and cater the funds of the proposal. Also, OPM (Organizsasyon ng mga Pilipino Mang-aawit)

will support the funds and the operations in the proposal, with that, it will create opportunities

to the local artists in Mindanao to present their talents and skills. Thus, the study assumes that

it will be open to the public to introduce Mindanao music to the community. Moreover, the

chosen site of the study assumes that it is relatively flat and ground zero to accommodate the

proposals. Considering the transportation in the site, it believes that the proposal will be

accessible with any transportation without causing problems to Davao city.

A music and arts performing center will develop to expose the Mindanao original music

to the music industry of the Philippines, with that, the proposal assumes to help the local artist

to give them a chance and be able to be heard in the music industry. Also, the study believes

that the audience in development will be influenced and be motivated by Mindanao music to

accept the culture of the Mindanao music presented.

1.6 Hypothesis

The proposal sought to present the essence and importance of Mindanao original

music to the locals. Also, through the music produce by the local artist in the development it will

give information and tends to experience the culture of the music the design strategies. Offering

a design that considering the perception and understanding of the audience in the development,

promote a nonverbal informative design strategy that connect with people’s awareness and

behavior towards the development. Thus, providing areas and spaces that will allow the local

artist to showcase and present their arts and culture of their music to the audience, giving them

a chance to demonstrate the essence and importance of their music through the development.

With creating the proposal, the Mindanao music with the help of the informative design

strategies will bring clarity to the users the are meant to direct, expound, and experience the

beauty of the arts and culture of Mindanao original music.

Due to the lack of confidence of the local artist of Mindanao because they were not an

opportunity to be heard, one of the scopes of the proposal is the local artist in Mindanao that

were currently active towards playing and singing the Mindanao Original music. With that, it

may influence other artists that were stop on singing and composing the Mindanao music. Also,

the culture of different kinds of Mindanao original music and different musical instruments of

the Mindanao local artist used are parts of the scopes of the study, in order to identity and

distinguish the types of Mindanao music to present to the audience of the development. The

Luzon and international music will not be a scope to study and not be presented in the

development.

Since the one of the goals of the study in to give information through communication

objective to the audience of the development, the informative design strategies are also the

scope of the proposal. In this matter, the informative design strategies are the major guidelines

to relay information and experience of Mindanao music to the audience.

Furthermore, one of the scopes of the study are also the Acoustics and lightings in the

development, it will enhance the quality of performance of the users in the development. Thus,

it will create a scenery that can also relay information and experience towards the audience.

The materials that will be used in the development that will improve the acoustic, lightings and

the performance of the local artist of Mindanao will also the scopes of the study, with that, it will

help to boost the performance of the local artist to their music.

Moreover, the proposal will also focus to the spaces that the development will offer to

the users, spaces that will accommodate the needs of the users to the development that will

also give the communication objective to inform the users. The design considerations of the

spaces that will answer the problems of the local artists.

1.8 Significance of the Study

The study is important as it helps the local artist to regain its essence and beauty to the

music industry through developing music and arts performing center which creates

opportunities to the Mindanao artists to relay their culture through performing their original

music to the development. This proposal will enhance and promote the music of the artist and

be able to contribute tourism to Davao city. Thus, the significance of this proposal was to

transfer information effectively to the audience and the music industry on expressing their

emotions through music. The importance of the Informative design strategies to the proposal is

the guide and be able to help the Mindanao original music regain its essence and importance

by distinguishing the proper information, like the types of songs, instruments and mode of music

will the artist relay to the audience through their performance in the development.

Furthermore, the study will improve the social and economic state of condition of the local

artist due to the opportunities that the development will give. Thus, allowing the people not only

Mindanao to learn and experience the beauty of arts and culture of Mindanao original music.

With that, the essence and the importance of the Mindanao original music will flourish, grow

and even be known internationally.

 Music – vocal sounds or the used of the instrument combined to

produce a form, harmony and expression of emotion

 Information – provides facts and learning about something

 Culture – the arts, beliefs of a specific group of people, place or society

 Artist – A person that makes paintings, drawings, and music as a

profession or hobby.

 Music – the Mindanao original music that local artist creates to

express the beauty of arts and culture.

 Informative strategies – Formulated design approach that focus on

achieving the communication objectives such as informing,

Chapter 2: Review of Related Literature

2.1 Philippine Culture and Heritage in the 21st Century Architecture

In these sections will identify the Philippine culture and heritage to support the study

and able to give guides and information to the proposal.

2.1.1 Philippine Culture

According to Sawe, 2018, the culture of the Philippine is commonly based on

the merging the western and eastern cultures. The indigenous Austronesian people

greatly influence it by their tradition and culture. Also, the landscape of the Philippine

culture was influenced by Spanish, American, Japanese, Arabic, and Indonesian.

Thus, religion has a vital role in forming a culture, and in the Philippines, Christianity

and Islam are a major religion that helps the Philippines culture (Sawe, 2018).

One of the cultures of the Philippines are that people in the Philippines are

more family oriented, takes important to their religion and appreciate the beauty of their

art, fashion, music and food. Also, there are good with people and usually love to have

a good time that includes singing, dancing, and eating. Also, Filipinos calendar are full

of festivals that represent their religions, character, origin, and even their own culture

which came from the nation’s pre-Christian with the Catholic beliefs and culture in the

present (Philippines - History and Culture, 2013).

2.1.2 Philippine Heritage

According to (Heritage, 2014), It is the scope of people’s inherited customs,

landmarks, arts, and culture. The most significant, it is the scope of people’s modern-

day exercises, implications, and practices that they draw from their ancestors. Heritage

also includes the preserving, uncovering, presenting, and restoring of past materials

and things. Thus, heritage is both tangible and intangible to the ideas and memories of

the important elements that define people’s identity and as important as the historical

structures and archaeological areas.

Furthermore, Heritage is a modern-day activity with a broad impact on people.

It may be a component of the far-sighted urban and regional planning. Also, it can be

the platform that makes recognitions, intercultural exchanges and reflections of

people’s moral actions for economic improvement. Heritage guided the present day to

build and improve the future (Heritage, 2014).

2.1.3 21st Century Architecture

According to Hameng (2017), Contemporary architectures is a style that uses

modern techniques, solutions and modern building materials in todays problems of the

buildings. The trends and innovations of these architectures boast into a large cluster

of influences and impacts which are diverse, acquiring odds and pieces from different

styles and periods (Hameng, 2017).

As Mwaniki (2019) stated, the contemporary architecture also uses modern

techniques and materials asides from using the various styles and impacts of other

architectural styles. A structure that is high-tech, stronger, durable, taller and more

efficient design than other architectural building in the past. With the contemporary

architecture it aids of modern designs software and applications with the use of new

techniques such as the computer-aided designs (CAD), structures that are built with

fast high level precision and speed (Mwaniki, 2019).

One of the characteristics of contemporary architecture is vivid of its forms,

design and movement. In design a structures and buildings in these architectures, the

aesthetic sense is important and emphasize to recognize the structures. A building can

be built by using only concrete, glass, aluminum screens and other innovative materials

that are not present in the modern architecture buildings. Also, contemporary

architecture applies sustainability. It is obtained by planning and designing structures

that are energy efficient with the use of recycled materials in the construction process.

Solar panels organize windows for natural wind and lightings to improve the efficiency

of the structures. Architect in these architectural styles tend to achieve design forms to

ensure the project economical and serve the purpose to the users.

2.2 Davao City

2.3 Music and Arts Performing Center

2.3.1 Cultural Center of the Philippines

The CCP or the Cultural Center of the Philippines is one of the premier

institutions for arts and culture in the country. It was built as a non-stock, non-

profit government institution just to preserve, enhance, and promote the arts

and culture of the Filipinos in the Philippines. It was designed by the national

artist Leondro V. Locsin in September 1969. In the institution, its scope

includes music, dance, theater, visual arts, literature, architecture, film and

broadcast arts and new media. Thus it also accommodate the artistic programs

that includes performances of artists, festivals, exhibitions, workshops,

national and international cultural exchange and archival and conservation

works (Cultural Center of the Philippines, 2012)

2.4 Philippine Music

According to Santos (2012) that the culture of the country is characterize and

express by music. It is were people try to express their feelings and emotions towards

other. Also, it represents their actions and daily activity, ritual and beliefs. As Sawe

(2018) stated that music of the Philippines is partly influence by the cultures in the

country. Traditional folk music and song are mostly inspired and influence by their

characteristics and beliefs. People in the Philippines love the essence of music.

Filipinos loves and admire the performing dances and singings in celebrations and in

every occasion. Also, their different musical instruments like ukulele, trumpet, drums,

and violin are brought by Spaniards and introduced their music to the Filipinos. Thus,

the music of the Filipinos is mostly contemporary and originally composed that are

based on their real-life events (El-Saba, 2015).
