Lesson Idea Name: Georgia Habitats

Content Area: Science
Grade Level(s): 3rd grade
Content Standard Addressed:
S3L1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about the similarities and differences between
plants, animals, and habitats found within geographic regions (Blue Ridge Mountains, Piedmont, Coastal
Plains, Valley and Ridge, and Appalachian Plateau) of Georgia.
1. Ask questions to differentiate between plants, animals, and habitats found within Georgia’s
geographic regions.

Technology Standard Addressed:

3. Knowledge Constructor
Students critically curate a variety of resources using digital tools to construct knowledge, produce creative
artifacts and make meaningful learning experiences for themselves and others. Students:
1. plan and employ effective research strategies to locate information and other resources for their
intellectual or creative pursuits.
2. evaluate the accuracy, perspective, credibility and relevance of information, media, data or other
resources.

Selected Technology Tool: Microsoft Word

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

This activity is inclusive to ALL students because you have the ability to work with others. So say a student has
vision/hearing impairments, they have another student to assist them with recording data. It also keeps
interest for students because they have to conduct and record their own research.

Lesson idea implementation:

This lesson will start with a video from Discovery Education discussing what a habitat is. Then we will move
into a discussion about habitats specific to Georgia. After that, I will ask students to pair up and use the word
document provided to set up their own chart to compare and contrast the different habitats in Georgia. This
will have students using the technology to record their data. Once finished, it is something they can print off
and turn into the teacher. That is how I will assess them and what they have learned or what we need to
spend more time on as a class.

Reflective Practice:
This lesson will have students working and researching on their own to learn more about habitats. It will also
serve to see how much the class knows about certain habitats and what we may need to spend more time on.
We could take each groups findings and put them into a class chart as well. This could be something we do
together as we come back together once the assignment is finished.
