DAY: ________1- MONDAY________________

I. OBJECTIVES
*1. The learners demonstrate understanding of grouping different materials
A. Content Standards based on their properties.
2. The learners demonstrate understanding of changes that materials
undergo when exposed to certain conditions.
The learners should be able to…
B. Performance Standards 1. Recognize and practice proper handling of products
2. Evaluate whether changes in materials that are useful on harmful to
one's environment.
3.
4.1 Identify and describe ways of changing solid materials in terms of
C. Learning Competencies/Objectives size, shape, texture, etc.
Write the LC code for each S4 MT-Ie-f-5
Define what solid is.
 *Identify some ways of changing solid materials in terms of size,
Specific Objectives: shape, texture etc.
 *Describe the changes that happen/s in solid materials

II. CONTENT 2. Changes that Materials Undergo

LESSON 10: Changes in Solid Materials

III. LEARNING RESOURCES

A. References
1. Teacher’s Guide pages pp.36-38
2. Learner’s Material pages pp. 29-30
3. Textbook pages
4. Additional Materials from Learning
Resource (LR) portal

B. Other Learning Resources candle, ice cube, wooden stick, crepe paper, plastic cup, chocolate bar
chart of the lesson, PowerPoint

IV. PROCEDURES
ELICIT Review: The Safety Precautions in Disposing Waste Materials
Tell whether the statement tells the safety precaution in disposing waste
materials. Write T if the statement is TRUE and F if FALSE
1. Mix the decaying and non- decaying materials.
2. Re-use plastic bags.
3. Segregate waste materials to biodegradable and non-biodegradable.
4. Never touch waste materials with your hand.
5. Biodegradable waste can be compost.
ENGAGE Let pupils fill in the graphic organizer the examples of solid materials that they
can see inside the classroom.

SOLID

Ask: In what way do they differ from one another?

Emphasized the concept that solid materials have different characteristics/
properties such as size, shape, color, texture weight and etc.
Present the lesson
Take one solid material from the gathered materials ( i.e. a piece of paper)
Tell the pupils to take a note of the different characteristics or properties of
the chosen material (size, shape, color, texture etc.)
Ask: Do you think we can do something to change the characteristics of this
paper? What can we do?

EXPLORE Divide the class into five groups. Let them identify and describe what changes
will happen if they do the following activities to the paper/crepe paper,
plastic cup, paper, ice cube, wooden stick. “How can I Change it?”
Group1 Flores: Fold the paper or crepe paper to three designs. Identify and
described changes happen to its size and shape. ( Present your output in a
form of interview)
Group2 Quisimbing: Cut the plastic cup and identify and described what
happen to the material if it still be look like a cup or not. (Present your output
by drawing).
Group3 Del Mundo: Using the ice cube put water on it then identify and
describe changes happened to it. (Present your output through demo.)
Group4 Dela Cruz: Using the wooden stick need it and report through Venn
diagram what happened to the wooden stick when you bend it and when you
did not. (Present your output through Venn Diagram).
Group5Del Rosario: Using the chocolate bar put some sugar on top of it
identify what happen to its texture when you add something(Present your
output through a talk show).

EXPLAIN Each group will present their output.

Ask:
 What are the characteristics of solid material?
 Can we change solid materials? How?
 What happened to the solid material when we cut, bend, fold,
crumpled, tear, etc?
 Solid can be change through many ways such as______________
 Is there a new material seen when you do something to the solid
material? Why Not?

 What do you call the changes happened to the solid material when
you do something on it?
ELABORATE Complete the Science Ideas below.

Solid materials can be _________.

There are so many ________ in changing solid such as ______________.
In every __________we can change the solid materials.
________ Changes only happened to the solid materials.
Solid materials may change in ___________, ________, ______ and _____.

PICK YOUR ANSWER

- physical
- change
- ways
- cutting, tearing, crumpling, coloring, bending, twisting etc.
- size, shape, color and texture.
EVALUATE Identify the following statements whether it is TRUE or FALSE in describing
solid materials.
____1. Solids are tangible or can be hold.
____2. Solid materials can be change.
____3. We can form new materials in solid when we do action on it.
____4. Physical changes only happen to the solid materials once you put
action on it.
____5. Cutting, crumpling, needing are ways in changing solid materials.
EXTEND Bring the following materials tomorrow for our experiment. (by group)
1. Soft plastic ruler
2. Paper clip
3. Rubber slippers
4. Electric wire (12 inches)
5. Metal spoon (used for eating)
