NAPIER Turbochargers

SB-295-A-004-02

ADVISORY

SUBJECT: NA295 COMPRESSOR END SEALING

A. TURBOCHARGERS AFFECTED

NA295 turbochargers operating with extended priming periods or showing other

operational oil leakage problems at the compressor end.

B. REASONS FOR BULLETIN

Instances of compressor end oil leakage have occurred, primarily in applications where
engines remain on standby or idle, or prime for extended periods.

C. CHANGES / MODIFICATIONS

A new design of compressor end seal ring is now standard, and replaces the previous
design. The tolerance on the bore of the seal ring bush has also been tightened to
maintain a smaller circumferential gap.

BJ2056 replaces DT21410.

Other Changes:
The rotor may also be modified to accommodate an oil thrower. This requires significant
modification (precision machining) to the rotor, and may be deemed necessary in
applications where extended priming (or idling) is carried out. The parts are listed in Part
Lists.

D. DESCRIPTION

Seal Ring
SIEMENS Industrial Turbomachinery Ltd. have developed an improved sealing system
for the NA295 which includes an upgraded “step gap” seal ring (fitted to all new units
from circa January 2000). The “step gap” seal ring is shown in Figure 1, as compared to
the previous design.

E. IMPLEMENTATION

Seal Ring:
The seal ring will be replaced automatically during servicing, with no other parts requiring
modification or replacement. New units will have the new design as standard.

Oil Thrower:
• Upgrade to oil thrower status need not be performed until an appropriate
service interval is reached, unless extreme circumstances dictate otherwise.

• Modification is not free of charge, although every effort will be made to

minimize inconvenience.

• Oil thrower modification requires specialist knowledge of dimensions and

procedure. Only SIEMENS Industrial Turbomachinery Ltd. approved service
centres may perform the operation.

• Where conversion to oil thrower status is considered necessary, the following

action is to be taken.

1. SIEMENS Industrial Turbomachinery Ltd. should be contacted immediately to
confirm all details of the site and its operating regime.

2. Criticality of operation will be agreed, i.e. It must be agreed when work can be
undertaken and the logistics necessary.

A summary of the operations for the oil thrower modification is as follows:

• Modification (machining) of impeller assembly.

• Modification (machining) of rotor shaft.
• Installation of a new seal ring bush.
• Addition of a thrower ring in the rotor assembly.
• Installation of a new step gap seal ring.
• Re-assembly including resetting of all clearances.
• Rebalance of the rotor shaft.
