Chapter 2

METHODOLOGY

This chapter provides a view on the research methods


and procedures undertaken by the researchers in the conduct
of the study.

Research Design

The study used quantitative approach, particularly


descriptive research. The purpose of the study is to
describe the profile, work preferences among graduating
nursing students in Tuguegarao City and the differences in
the work preferences when grouped according to profile.

Participants of the Study

There will be 129 graduating nursing students who come


from various schools and Universities in Tuguegarao City
Cagayan namely, St. Paul University Philippines, University
of St. Louis Tuguegarao, University of Cagayan Valley and
with the inclusion of Medical Colleges of Northerthen
Philippines (MCNP). The total population of each University
will be taken; the researchers will utilize stratified
random sampling in this study. The sample of the study is
129 participants with a margin error of .05 and confidence
level of 95% which is categorized into 17 participants from
the School of Nursing of University of Cagayan Valley
(UCV), 14 participants from the School of Nursing of Saint
Loius Tuguegarao(USL), and 59 participants from School of
Nursing of Saint Paul University Philippines(SPUP).

Instrumentation

The researchers will utilized the Work Preference


Indicator (WPI) (Gilbert, 2008) for the study work
preferences among graduating nursing students in Tuguegarao
City. The WPI contains 75 statements that describe the work
preferences of nursing graduates and graduating nursing
students in Tuguegarao City, considering the 16 constructs.
The WPI had a “crhonbach alpha scale of the 17 constructs
ranging from 0.78 to 0.93… EFA and CFA

The first part of the instrument will have the


participants profile which the researchers have included.
The profile contains the biographic data of the
participants specifically gender, age.

The second part consists of the items in the WPI,


which can be grouped into. The participants will choose
from a Likert scale of 1-5, where (1)is strongly disagree,
(2) is disagree, (3) – neutral, (4) agree and (5) is
strongly agree.

Data Gathering Procedure

To conduct the study, the following procedures will be


employed by the researchers:

1. The study will be subjected to the ERC Application


and approval

2. The researchers will recruit the participants thru


social media by contacting a friend to relay the
information.

3. Informed Consent will be facilitated by the


researchers verbally and as a group. Once the
participant agrees the researchers will explain the
purpose of the study to the participants to obtain
their cooperation in the study. .

4. The researchers will have to ask permission to the


graduating nursing students from the different
universities to allow them to conduct a study onto
their work preferences.

5. The researchers also elaborated that the


participants can refuse to participate or take part
in the study and there are no incentives given.

6. The procedure and the questionnaires will be


personally conducted and given by the researchers
to ensure a more reliable and a valid response, and
it will be given to them in their most convenient
time. The student nurses will be informed that
their great participation upon answering the

questionnaires provides genuine information about


the different work preferences of student nurses.

7. After collecting the answered questionnaires it


will be tallied and analyzed accordingly.

A. Purpose and Background


The researchers, Kathleen L. Dauan, Renielyn Robillos,
Jovelyn Tagacay, Jeremiah Abu is conducting a research
“Work Preference among graduating Nursing Students to
work in a private hospital in Tuguegarao City”. The
purpose of your participation in this research is to
help the researchers to determine the different kinds
of work preferences of the future nurses. You were
selected as a possible participant in this study
because you are a graduating nursing student from one
of the schools in Tuguegarao City.

B. Procedures
If you agree to participate in this research study,
the following will occur:

1. The participants will answer the questionnaires


that will be given to them

2. The researchers will utilize a face to face


interview to collect data from the participants.

C. Risks
The participants may be uncomfortable, embarrassed or
inconvenienced by the researchers by implementing this
research study and getting them as their research
participants.

D. Benefits of Participation
There will be no direct benefit to you from
participating in this research study. The anticipated
benefit of your participation in this study is that
you can determine whether a certain work place met
your work preferences and it will improve your views
on the different work preferences.

E. Confidentiality
The confidentiality of the records from this study
will be kept as confidential as possible. No
individual identities will be used and any reports of
publications resulting from the study. Research
information will be kept in from any names or other
direct identification of participants. Research
information will be kept in locked files at all times.
Only researcher personnel will have access to the file

and only those with an essential need to see names or


other identifying information will have access to that
particular file after the study is completed.

F. Voluntary of Participation
Your decision whether or not to participate in this
study is voluntary and will not affect your
relationship to the researchers. If you choose to
participate in this study, you can withdraw your
consent and discontinue participation at any time
without prejudice.

aims to help know the view and perspective of Nursing and
graduating Nursing Students about their work preference,

3. The ANOVA analysis is used to reveal significant

differences in extent of work preferences of the

participants when grouped according to the profile

variable.
