Task 17. Reading
Read the text and mark the statements (1-6) as true (T) or false (F).

BUY, BUY, BUY…

Do you go shopping whenever you feel depressed? Do you spend
too much money on things you don’t really need, lose control and
then go into debt? If you answered ‘yes’ to these questions, you may
be a shopaholic!

‘Shopaholism’ is uncontrolled shopping in order to feel better about

yourself. Just like some people go on holidays to sunny countries or
eat chocolate to feel better, others simply go on shopping sprees. But
shopaholics usually come home with bags and bags of items, most of
which will never be used, and an empty bank account.

So, what can you do about the problem?

 Always pay in cash. Never take your credit cards with you when you
go shopping – or better still, destroy them altogether.

 Make a shopping list before you leave the house and stick to it.

 Work out a monthly budget, so you know what you can spend.

 Take only enough money with you to pay for the absolute essentials.

 Avoid ordering goods from catalogues, and don’t watch shopping

channels on TV.

 If you see something you feel you must have, ask the shop to
keep it for you and go back again a few days later. If you still
want it, buy it.
Just follow these simple steps and you should never lose control
of your purse or your budget again!

1 Shopaholics always by more than they need. …….

2 Shopaholics shop to make themselves feel happy. …….
3 If you shop a lot, it is best to leave your cash at home. …….
4 Buying only what you need helps you control your
shopping. …….
5 Shopaholics should not watch TV. …….
6 You should be sure you really need something
before you buy it. …….

TRANSCRIPT

Less than 150 years ago, the magnificent Chinese Imperial Summer Palace in Beijing was robbed and burnt by the
British and the French. At the time, more than 1000 tons of hard drugs a year were smuggled into China by Britain,
who used the military to protect their drug trafficking interests from the Chinese government.

300 men and women were burned alive inside the palace. 3,500 British troops carried out the destruction and
massacre. Charles Gordon of the Royal Engineers took part. “We went out, and after pillaging it, burned the whole
place... We got upward of 48 pounds apiece prize money... I have done well... You can scarcely imagine the beauty
and magnificence of the places we burnt... It was wretchedly demoralizing work for an army.”

Many of the treasures were more than 3,500 years old.

The wonderful palace grounds, known as the Garden of Perfect Brightness, were destroyed so completely that
the area was used for farmland until the 1980s. Inside the garden, there was an amazing zodiac water clock. It
consisted of twelve bronze statues representing the signs of the Chinese zodiac. All these statues were robbed in
the attack.

 Remember that have is for I, you, we and they. Has is for he, she and it.
 After auxiliary have we need to use the Past Participle of the verb. That is why we always use been.
 After auxiliary be (been) we need a verb with -ing form.
Uses:
Just like Present Perfect Simple, Present Perfect Progressive is used for actions in the past. With this tense we
emphasize the time. The duration of the action is very important; unlike Present Perfect Simple where the action is
more important than the time. We use it for:

 Actions that started in the past and continue in the present.

I have been studying English for 24 years.
 Actions that happened in past but the results are clear in the present.
The last few weeks I have been redecorating my house. Look at my new furniture!
