I. Abstract

The study is a Gender-Based Research that focuses on the perspective of male Mapúan
students towards the decency of women. How do men define decency nowadays? What attributes
should a woman have in order to be called decent? These questions are to be answered in the latter
part of the research. Furthermore, this research aims to come up with a conclusion on the point of
view of men regarding the decency of women in today’s generation.

II. Description of the Study

The decency of women is a very controversial issue today due to the fact that most of the
women of present time have ended up getting pregnant, have had premarital sex, or have engaged
in other vices that may have ruined their future. First, we must know what decency means, and
according to Merriam-Webster Dictionary, “decency is the behaviors that people in a society
consider to be proper or acceptable,” although this description is just from a one man’s perspective
and it may have changed over time due to different factors like liberalism, social afflicts, and trends
that influence the thinking of one’s mind. In the present generation, people tend to judge others
how we look, walk, talk, and socialize with the opposite sex. In this study, we would like to know
more on the insights of men on women’s decency since women are the ones who are victimized
by this current issue. If this research would come up to be a good one, it would raise social
awareness among the women on proper decorum.

III. Conceptual Framework

Perception of Men on Female Decency

Clothing trend Influences by people around her

Decency based on attitude,

Decency based on looks morals, manners

Physical Properties Influence by the environment she grew up with

Decency based on looks/appearance
Clothing Trend:

As time changes, so does clothing trend. It comes more modern some which really
degrades the womanly charm and decency in the eyes of men, although some men prefer the
modern style of clothing.

Physical/Facial Properties:

To some women, image is key and whether we like it or not, most people judge other
people’s personality by their looks. Just because a woman looks decent, she acts decent already.
But due to some factors, a man is blinded by a woman’s outer appearance that makes her decent
in their point of view, although there are cases where the situation is “what you see is what you
get”, wherein how one looks is exactly how one acts.

Decency based on morals, attitude and manners

Influence of people (peers and family) around her:

Being in the wrong group or peers gives off an aura which is actually bad of a woman’s
image. They also give pressure to her which changes her personality and affects the decisions she
makes and her values. Family also gives the same effect to a woman’s morals, manners and attitude
but it is up to her whether she will get the positive traits or the negative ones.

Influence of the environment she grew up with:

In movies, a decent woman is always described as someone who comes from a rich family
and is highly educated, and those born in the slums are the misbehaved ones. If a woman grows
up in a classy environment, the chance that she will be decent is high but that is not entirely true
because even the most educated person have secrets they hide. Of course, every men has a different
perspective on female decency, so to some background itself really does not matter to them but on
how those environment help her develop her character.

IV. Methodology

and discussion
Research tools

 Survey – The purpose of having a survey is to gather data on how much the participant’s
awareness and knowledge about the concerned topic. . If so, the researchers will be able to
gather data and analyze the situation. Therefore, they could come up with a conclusion on
what really is today’s perception on a woman’s decency. The survey will consist of 20
male Mapúan students with any sexuality.

Research design (Descriptive research)

This type of research describes what exists at the time and then goes on to try and uncover new
facts and meanings. The purpose of this is to observe, describe, and document.

Procedure

The method that the researchers used was survey because it would be easier to know the
participants’ thoughts and opinions about the decency of women. The researchers conducted a
survey on seventeen male students with any sexuality with the following questions:

1. How would you define decency?

2. What attributes does a woman need in order to be called a decent woman?

3. How do you think does women’s decency change over time?

Some were hesitant because they were to shy to answer while some were surprised because the
researchers topic was new to them. Some participants otherwise were straightforward and
answered the question directly without hesitant. After the researchers conduct the interviews and
survey they gathered the data and analyzed the problem. Finally, the researchers came up with the
conclusion based on the data gathered.

V. Results and Discussion

Upon conducting a survey on 20 male Mapúan correspondents, we have found that most
of their perceptions on women’s decency are very similar. When asked about their own
definition of decency, most of the correspondents answered that decency is about being polite,
moral, proper, respectable, or in other words, a standard norm of behaving righteous and
properly. One correspondent said, “Decency is like a pencil. It can draw one’s personality.” The
correspondents were also asked on what they think are the attributes that a woman needs in order
to be called decent. Most of their answers led to being modest, dressing properly and elegantly,
and behaving properly and like a lady. Lastly, the correspondents were asked on how the
decency of women change over time. Some of them answered that decency is greatly affected by
the trends of social media. Some said that it is because of peer pressure, while some answered
that it is just a cause of nature and the environment.

VI. Conclusion

The conclusion on the perception of male Mapúan students on women’s decency may or
may not be accurate because we only had twenty correspondents. However, according to the data
we have gathered, decency is about having a proper and respectable attitude and behavior. It is
about being modest and behaving in the standards of the norms. A woman needs to have self-
respect, self-esteem, modesty or in other words, behave like a respectable lady, in order to be
called a decent woman.

VII. Recommendations

Given that this study provides a basis for concluding the perception of male Mapúan
students on the decency of women, it is recommended that researchers also study the perception
of the women on their own decency, or the perception of the LGBT members on the female
decency.

VIII. Appendices

The following are the questions that we asked on our correspondents:

1) How would you define decency?

2) What attributes does a woman need in order to be called a decent woman?
3) How do you think did women's decency change over time?
4) Give ways on how a woman can show her decency.
