What are the factors of environment affecting the personality of a person?

The environment is everything that affects the individual except his genes. There are many potential
environmental influences that help to shape personality. These include the place we live and the people
around us. Our experiences in our day to day life, as well as the people whom we associated with such as
our family, friends, people in the school, in the church and the community as a whole, all influences our
personality especially in our social interaction in the society.

The environment can continue to mold a personality after conception. There is a strong case that the
environment does influence personality. That what we learn, see, live and experience that we get in our
surroundings to shape are personality.

Environmental factors play a vital role in the development of Joetic conditions of a particular area or
country on man and his living.

According to Mwamwenda (1996) with social environment the child has his/her birth in the society.
He/she learns and lives there. Hence, the social environment has an important say in the personality
development of the child. Family environment plays a vital role in personality development. Family is the
cradle of all social virtues. The first environment the child moves in is his home. Here the child comes in
contact with his parents and other family member his likes, dislikes, stereotypes about people,
expectancies of security and emotional responses all are shaped in early childhood. The type of training
and early childhood experiences received from the family play an important role in the development of
personality.

Cultural Environment is another factor, the cultural environment refers to certain cultural traditions,
ideals, and values which are accepted in a particular society. All these factors leave a permanent
impression on the child’s personality.

School Environment; Schools play an important role in molding the personality of the children because a
significant part of a child’s life is spent in school between the ages of 6 and 20 years. In the school, the
teacher substitutes the parents. The school poses new problems to be solved, new taboos to be
accepted into the superego and new models for imitation and identification, all of which contribute their
share in molding personality.

Language is another factor which influences personality development. Human beings have a distinctive
characteristic of communication through language. Language is an important vehicle by which the
society is structured and culture of the race transmitted from generation to generation. The child’s
personality is shaped by the process of interaction through language with other members of his
environment.

1.) Family

First and the foremost factor that influences the personality development of a person is his family.
Parent’s behavior and attitude, their expectations from the child, their education and attention to the
child, influences the child’s personality. The type of experiences received from family in early childhood
will play an important role in the development of personality. Economic and social condition of the
family will also influences a child’s personality.

2.) School

Next social factor that affect the child’s personal development is the school. School atmosphere and
discipline affects personality development of a child. Teacher’s personality and character, peer students
attitude and character all influences personality of a child’s development.

3.) Maturation

Maturation improves the coordination of numerous relationships.

4.) Early Experience

One’s experience is influencing the personality of a person. Bitter experience and positive experience
suffered by person early in the stage of life is also affects personality of a person.

5.) Success and Failures

Success and Failures suffered in the life also plays a key role in developing personality of a person. It may
play as a role of motivation and demotivation in a person’s life.

6.) Cultural

The cultural traditions, values accepted in a particular society are the cultural environment. These factors
influence development of child’s personality.

7.) Physical and Social

Physical and social environment such as country of birth and living will also affects the development of a
child’s personality.
