HEALTH TALK ON “DIET IN ANEMIA”

INTRODUCTION:
Anemia is a condition in which you don't have enough
healthy red blood cells to carry adequate oxygen to
your tissues..

min to the topic. There are many forms of anemia, each with its own discussion
cause. Anemia can be temporary or long term, and it
can range from mild to severe.
anemia can be a sign of serious illnesses. Treatments
for anemia range from taking supplements to
undergoing medical procedures. You may be able to
prevent some types of anemia by eating a healthy,
varied diet.

SYMPTOMS:

Initially, anemia can be so mild it goes unnoticed. But signs
and symptoms increase as anemia worsens.

COMPLICATIONS:

anemia  Heartroblems. Anemia can lead to a rapid or
irregular heartbeat — an arrhythmia. Your heart must
pump more blood to compensate for the lack of
oxygen in the blood when you're anemic. This
can even lead to congestive heart failure.

 Death. Some inherited anemias, such as sickle cell

anemia, can be serious and lead to life-threatening
complications. Losing a lot of blood quickly results
in acute, severe anemia and can be fatal.
 Vitamin C. Foods containing vitamin C, such as
citrus fruits, melons and berries, help increase iron
absorption.
Consider genetic counseling if you have a family history
of anemia
If you have a family history of an inherited anemia, such
as sickle cell anemia, talk to your doctor and possibly a
genetic counselor about your risk and
what risks you may pass on to your children.
PREVENTION:

Choose a vitamin-rich diet

Many types of anemia can't be prevented. However, you
can help avoid iron deficiency anemia and vitamin
deficiency anemias by choosing a diet that includes a
variety of vitamins and nutrients, including:

anemia.  Folate. This nutrient, and its synthetic form, folic
acid, can be found in citrus fruits and juices, bananas,
dark green leafy vegetables, legumes and fortified
breads, cereals and pasta.
 Vitamin B-12. This vitamin is found naturally in
meat and dairy products. It's also added to some cereals
and soy products, such as soy milk.
TREATMENT:
Your individual treatment plan should be determined with
your doctor and will be unique to you and your situation.
Your treatment may include:

DIETARY CHANGES
An anemia diet is a meal plan that contains iron-rich food
source and foods that aid the absorption of iron. It may
also include iron supplements. Iron supplements
should be taken under a doctor’s supervision because
the risk of toxicity in the case of high supplemental doses
of iron is significant.

FOODS THAT ARE RICH IN IRON:

There are two types of iron in food sources. Heme iron is
found in animal products and non-heme iron is found in
plant foods.
1. Heme Iron Foods
These are the foods that contain the ‘heme iron’ which is
present in the animal products. Examples of foods that are
rich in heme iron are given as follows.
o Oysters
o Chicken liver
o Beef liver
o Turkey
o Sardines, shellfish, and fish
2. Non-Heme Iron Foods
These are the foods that contain the ‘non-heme iron’
which is present in the plant products as well as in milk,
meat and eggs. Examples of foods that are rich in non-
heme iron are given as follows.
o Green leafy vegetables
o Enriched breakfast cerea
o Pumpkin seeds
o Cooked lentils and beans
o Baked potato
o Enriched pasta

FOODS THAT BOOST IRON ABSORPTION

o Foods rich in vitamin C and citric acid such as
oranges
o Fruits like cantaloupes, strawberries, and
grapefruits
o Vegetables like broccoli, tomato, brussels sprouts,
and red and green peppers
o Beef
o Poultry
o Salmon and some other kinds of fish
o Wheat germ

FOODS THAT INHIBIT IRON ABSORPTION

o Foods that contain high amount of the minerals
zinc, calc
o ium, copper, and magnesium. These minerals
compete with iron for their absorption
o Foods that contain high amount of fiber
o Legumes, grains, and other plant foods
o Eggs, both the whites and the yolks
o Tea, coffee and other beverages that contain tannic
acid
o Cocoa
o Some herbs, including chamomile and, peppermint
DIET IN ANEMIA: Lecture cum
discussion
A diet rich in iron helps in increasing the hemoglobin
levels. It is seen that iron from non-veg sources (heme-
iron) is more readily absorbed than iron from vegetarian
sources (non-heme iron). The addition of vitamin C to the
diet helps in the absorption of iron and hence squeezing
some lime juice on your salads/food and eating or drinking Which type

meals as the tannins present in the tea can interfere with
the absorption of iron from the meal.

Adults and children who are diagnosed of low hemoglobin

count require an iron rich diet. Diet for anemia contains
iron rich veg/non-veg sources and is
nutritionally rich in vitamins and folic acid.
