The mean is the sum of a set of values, divided by the number of values, i.e.:
X ( x1 x2 xn ) / n
n
( xi ) / n
i 1
1 n
xi
n i 1
The mean is also known as the average, or sometimes the “center of mass” of a set of
numbers. The symbol that conventionally stands for the mean, X , is pronounced “X-
bar.”
In the analysis of spatial data, a weighted mean (or locally weighted mean) is often used:
n
wi xi
X* i 1 ,
n
wi
i 1
where the w’s are determined by some function of distance, e.g. wi (1/ di2 ) , where di is
the distance between the i-th observation and some reference point, usually the center of
the distribution of points, or the intensity or density of some process at each site.
This follows from some of the rules that the summation operator follows, i.e.
n n
( xi X ) xi (n X ),
i 1 i 1
n n n
because ( xi b) xi (n b). Then, because xi (n X ) by definition,
i 1 i 1 i 1
n n
xi (n X ) 0, and this implies ( xi X ) 0.
i 1 i 1
for some value A. This implies that the mean is the “balance point” of the set of numbers
xi .
