The faculty members of IIMA and other IIMs were invited to take part in a colloquium to
discuss the future of case method in India.
The following insights were emerged from the discussion:
 A case statement is made by taking a real-life decision-making scenario to make the
participants understand the nuances involved in decision making. A proper data
interpretation is needed to make decision on cases.
 Active participation is required by the participants in order to develop the required
competencies.
 In a case study the discussion may sometimes end with an ambiguity and moreover
the analysis of the cases is available on the internet, this reduces the active
engagement of the participants in the discussion.
 To make the case study interesting, instructors are trying to create a case in a
multimedia format in order to make the participants engage in the case.
 There were also other forms of case study for PGP (Post-Graduate Programme) in IIMA
namely WAC (Written Analysis and Communication) to improve analytical skill and
written communication, the other is Case based role play where the participant had to
take up a role and enact the situation. The former method turned out only to be a skill-
based, and not communication based, and the latter method helped in refining the
student’s communication.
 The case method helps the future managers by enhancing their problem-solving
approach, identifying decision areas, generating, evaluating and implementing the
appropriate options, and monitor the situation.
 The case study method bridges the gap between management reality and
methodical management.
 There is a shortage of good cases that are available, which can bring out important
concepts. There are also some cases created based on data available on the internet.
But these cases do not reflect the situations faced by the managers.
 The case studies used in IIM’s are old cases which are outdated, and the solutions
implemented at those times may seem insignificant these days and hence the
institutes must focus on developing cases that reflect the problems faced in the
recent times.
 Institutionalization of case studies in new IIMs require lots of efforts from both the
students and the faculty.
 The task of the instructor is not to invoke analytical thinking among the students, but
to facilitate the learning process.
 Instead of analysing a case that was already analysed for many times in the past, it
would be better to provide the case with field-based projects in order to facilitate
the real time business decision making.
The above were the insights that were obtained from the discussion, and case method will
help the future managers to face and analyse the risk involved in making a real time
business decision.
