Globalization theories
1. World systems
theory
 Defined by Immanuel Wallerstein
in “World Systems Analysis”
 The world as a unit divided into
three regions:
Core
Periphery

Core
• Strong central government
• Economically diversified
• Industrialized
• Relatively independent of outside control
• Western European countries, USA, Canada, Japan

Periphery
• Relatively weak government
• Dependent on one-type of economic activity
• Has high percentage of poor and uneducated people
• Small upper class controls most of the economy
• Huge inequality in the population

Semi-periphery
• Middle ground
• Not dominant in the international trade but has a relatively
diversified and developed economy
• From periphery moving up or from core declined to semi periphery
• India, Brazil

2. Modernization theory
• All countries follow a similar path of
development: from traditional to a
modern society.

• It assumes that with some help,

traditional societies can developed
into modern countries as the
countries adapts to modern

technologies and the political and

inequalities among countries
Globalization theories
3. Dependency theory
• Characteristics of Third World countries
 They have their own structures and
features not seen in the developed
countries and will not accelerate to
become a developed nation.
They are in an unfavorable economic
position because don’t even have the
opportunity to improve and develop.
They remain poor and dependent on

Globalization theories
3. Dependency theory
• Periphery(third world
countries/poor countries) export
resources to the wealthy core(first
world/rich countries) not because
they are in the early stage of
development but because they have
been integrated into the world

system as an undeveloped country.

INTEGRATION

Group Activity
• Form 5 groups
• Each group will be assigned of an area:
– Group 1: Clothing
– Group 2: School supplies
– Group 3: TV Shows
– Group 4: Food
– Group 5: Gadgets
• List down as many as you can and identify the country where
each item came from.
• You have 10 minutes to do the task.
Group Activity
• Analyze the list you have created, using the theories of
globalization.
• Answer the following:
– Do all items come from the same country?
– How did it happen?
– Describe the country where most of the items came from?
– Why are these not produced in the Philippines?
– What does it tell us about the Philippines and the Filipinos?
– Use one of the three theories to form a conclusion about it.
