APPENDIX B — NONMANDATORY

REQUALIFICATION

B-100 EXTENDING ALLOWED CYCLIC

LIMITS WHILE IN OPERATION
(a) It is recognized that the fatigue and fracture
analyses of Articles KD-3 and KD-4, respectively,
define only the minimum cyclic potential of a high
pressure vessel.
(b) Article KD-3 is applicable only as long as the
pressure vessel remains in as-new condition; however,
the results of the analysis may not be valid if inservice
deterioration occurs.
(c) Further, Article KD-4 requires assuming an initial
material flaw size which may not exist when a pressure
vessel is first manufactured.
(d) To accommodate the potentially restrictive limits
described above and at the same time provide realistic
guidance to users of high pressure vessels, ASME
HPS, High Pressure Systems, includes such guidance
governing periodic requalification examinations. Such
requalification, however, is outside the scope of this
Division.
