2.- FUNDAMENTACIÓN DE LA ASIGNATURA

English is the most spoken language around the world; therefore it is a requirement for our students of
engineering at the Faculty of Civil Engineering of the Universidad Técnica de Machala to develop basic
skills specially in English for Specific Purpose (ESP) focusing in reading comprehension of scientific
text and vocabulary to become capable to have a sort of communication and interaction with
technological, scientific, and educational information nowadays in a globalized world. Learning these
basic skills will contribute to them to be more efficient in translating text, documents and instruction
manuals for equipment and instruments used on a daily basis in their career instead of paying a
translator or using an internet translator that makes the work easier but untruthful because all the time
they do the cold translation and the information to be used might be wrong.
Also for their future chemistry career as future professionals they will use this worldwide language
when attending to international conferences. Besides, most of the periodicals linked to building,
planning, designing and enfineering are in English therefore it becomes a need to study ESP.

3.- OPERACIONALIZACIÓN DE LA ASIGNATURA CON RESPECTO AL PERFIL DE EGRESO

3.1 Objeto de Estudio de la Asignatura

The object of Technical English IV is the process of comprehending and interpreting technical
texts
focused in Civil Engineering career.
3.2 Objetivo de la Asignatura
To provide to the students a tool for interpreting informative data and texts by using translation
and reading techniques in order to develop skills to understand technological, scientific

Each student will show a learning evidence progress folder which will be called portfolio of the subject.
This will be contained all the outcomes of activities done in class and extra class, and the final exams.

8.- EVALUACIÓN

8.1 Evaluaciones Parciales

They are all the assessment within the learning process that is determinate before classes. The
students will present written reports as a result of the bibliographical research.
There will be considered class participation based on the active engagement in class discussion
and the quantity and quality of comments a student make. It will also be considered the

pertinence of the subject.

They will be the exams which are established in the academic calendar of the subject. The exam
for the first cycle will be in 9th week and the final one on the 18th week
