Level 2
Mango glut

The Philippines is made up of over 7,000 islands. The largest is

called Luzon.

Currently, there is a mango problem on Luzon. The islands’

farmers have produced a glut, or too many.

Mango trees grow in tropical, or hot countries. In these places,

they are a popular type of fruit.

The trees that grow on Luzon are called Carabao mangoes.

When their fruit ripens it is a yellowish color.

Mangoes are picked, or harvested, when green. The fruit then

continues to ripen. India grows the most mangos.

Many people will eat mangoes for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

Mango juice is added to
smoothies and ice cream. In
India, mangoes are added to
curries.

This year, Luzon’s weather has

been unusual. Temperatures
are high and there has been
less rain.

Because of the glut, the price

of mangoes has fallen.
Government officials do not
want the extra mangoes to be
wasted.

They have set up mango stalls around Manila, the country’s

capital city.
