Import Export Code or IE Code is required for every person or firm or company or entity engaged in export business in Indi

IE Code is provided by the Director General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) as required under the Foreign Trade Policy. No person


allowed to export or import goods without obtaining IE Code. Further, for availing benefit under Merchandise Export from 
India Scheme (MEIS) or Service Export from India Scheme (SEIS), IE code is a mandatory requirement

 IE Codes when issued can be used by the entity throughout its existence and doesn't require any renewal or filing. 


Therefore, it is recommended for most organizations to obtain IE Code, irrespective of if they need it at the moment.

IEC is not required under the following circumstances:


1. Import/export of goods for personal use, which is not connected with trade, manufacture or agriculture.
2. Import/export by government ministries and departments, and certain notified charitable organizations.

2. Individual’s voter id or Aadhar card or passport copy.
3. Individual’s or company’s or firm’s cancel cheque copy of current bank account. (or bank certificate)
4. Copy of Rent Agreement or Electricity Bill Copy of the premise.

It is very easy to get an IEC. Once the application is submitted at this link by filling up required details, e IEC gets
generated online immediately which then can be downloaded, printed and used. A random sample based
inspection is carried out after issue by the department, and in case of any discrepancy, the applicant is contacted to
provide further details or to rectify the documents.

Step 1: Visit Director General of Foreign Trade (DGFT)’s official website – http://dgft.gov.in/

Step 2: From the top menu, select ‘Online Application’ >> ‘IEC’ >> ‘Online IEC Application’, as shown in the
image below.

Step 3: On this screen, you will be asked to enter your ‘PAN’ card number. Enter your PAN number and click the
button ‘Next’.

Step 4: On this next screen, select the radio button with the option – ‘Apply for Fresh e-IEC’. Then, enter your
mobile number and email ID in the respective fields. Then, enter the captcha code in the given field, and click on
the ‘Generate Token’ button to generate tokens. The tokens are basically one time passwords (OTPs) to verify your
identity.

Step 5: You will receive two different tokens – one on your provided mobile number and another one on your
provided email ID. Enter these tokens in the respective fields, as shown in the image below. Then, press the button
‘Submit’.

Step 6: As you submit the details, you will be provided with an Ecom Reference ID for your application.

Step 7: On this next screen, you can fill up details related to your company or proprietorship firm, address,
contact details, etc.

Step 8: You can pay IEC application fees online via different payment modes, like a Credit card, debit card, net
banking, etc.

Step 9: You can upload the required documents easily in the image and/or PDF formats to get your IEC certification.

Step 10: Once done with all the steps, you can submit your application.

It normally takes 10 days to get the IEC code in India to do import-export business.

Also, once the IEC code online is issued you may check IEC code status 'View your IEC' at the DGFT website.

What is the fee for fresh Importer Exporter code Application?
Application fee is Rs. 1000/- which can be paid through Demand
Draft / Pay Order  to apply for IEC code.(Amount may differ time to
time; you may get exact amount from issuing authority)

What is fee for Modification in Importer Exporter Code? 


No fee is chargeable for modification in Importer Exporter Code, if
informed within 90 days of such changes. After 90 days, a fee of
Rs.1000/- charged. 

What is the fee for issuance of duplicate Importer Exporter Code ? 


Rs.200/- payable in for D.D./TR. (Amount may differ time to time;
you may get exact amount from issuing authority)
