Project Title:

To Develop an Inexpensive Smartphone Shield That Reduces the Impacts of EMF & RF Radiation
[PH62]

Category:

Physics and Astronomy (PH)

Synopsis:

To Develop an Inexpensive Smartphone Shield to Reduce the Impacts of EMF & RF Radiation
Smartphone functions bring with them greatly increased demands upon the antenna and require
more radiation power for transmission, which serves up to five frequency bands while occupying less
space than ever before available for the antenna. These radiations are the cause of serious human
ailments and so severe that smart phones have been banned in several schools.. The shield is
developed to firstly contain and then slowly throw the radiation out away from humans. It is in the
form of a Flip Cover which can be used with phones to block the harmful radiation. We have used
Aluminum and Copper as the basic metals for our innovation. Aluminum and Copper are two of the
absolute and most reliable metals when it comes to blocking and shielding EMF radiation. This is
primarily due to their ability to attenuate magnetic and electrical waves. We reshaped the aluminum
foil to fit the size of the phone and then placed copper strips on it. Also There is a layer of
corrugated metal surface to scatter the radiation. The complete cover is ready. Afterwards we used
EM radiation detector to check the efficiency of the shield and deduce the errors with it. The Shield
reduced the radiation from phone by over 90% and successfully passed most of the tests. This shield
is not only limited to Smartphone but can also be used for various other electronic devices.

Project Information:

Objectives and introduction:

We noticed that our head started aching more at home and tried to figure the problem out, from
Google , we got to know that even our basic electrical equipments are gradually harming us in one
way or another. The EM and RF radiation, majority of it from smart phones, is the root of all this evil.
So we started searching for ways to block it and with the consultation of our teacher brought the idea
to contain and then scatter the radiation from phones. We hoped to achieve 80% blockage of
radiation but ended up successfully blocking more than 90% of the radiation.

Innovation:

The part to bring the shield to phones from a big case is what we thought of. There were many links
where shoe boxes were used but we needed something compact and relative to phones. So after long
research we started making a Flip Cover for IPhone to check if it could be truly possible. The idea
became a real accomplishment and we started finalizing the SHIELD. Yes, our concept can be
considered to be out of the box since after so long & deliberate experimentation, we triumphed our
sole aim.
Algorithm:

We followed the following sequence:

1. As soon as we found out our interest, we reached for our mentor and asked her to guide
us in firmly establishing the idea.

2. We drew a layout of what we would do and how we would proceed further and progress.

3. We stared searching out on Internet , referred some of the books and came out with our
basic elements.

4. After extensive research , we started making the Shield and deigned it to be as accurate
as it could be to fit the size of the phone.

5. A number of test were carried out by us to check how efficient it was.

6. As it passed each test , the rate of success grew higher

6. Finally, we finished working and presented it for IRIS.

Method:

We gave an hour daily to gather information about the same . In a month our rubric was ready. Then
we started learning about mobile phone dimensions and chalked out the model to be used. Sheer
hard work was done and number of days was spent to finalize the project. An EM detector was bought
(link in the description) and then the observations were made. We used phones of different types to
first record how much on an average the radiation the phone produce. Then we started making
attempts to owe the radiation level. It was a work needing accuracy and so help from parents and
other teachers was taken. The readings lowered slowly and finally the desired outcome was reached.

Conclusions/Results:

The results were triumphant. We recorded over 90% blockage of EM and RF radiation the highest and
over 82% on an average. The shield could be used in Smart phones and feature phones too after
some amendments. The experiments and the project was a success.
