SUBJECT GROUP SUBJECT: Chemistry GRADE:9

UNIT TITLE Topic: The particulate nature of matter UNIT DURATION: 16th Aug – 25th Aug

LEARNING To make students

OBJECTIVES  Recall and Communicate limited knowledge and understanding of scientific phenomena, facts, laws,
definitions, concepts and theories
(of the whole unit)

Learning Outcomes Students will be able to:

 Explain changes of state in terms of the kinetic theory
 Describe and explain Brownian motion in terms of random molecular
Bombardment
 Describe and explain diffusion and dependence of rate of diffusion on molecular mass

Key Terms Solids, Liquids, Gases, Kinetic particle theory,Diffusion, Brownian motion

There are a number of good videos on the internet

Describe and explain Brownian motion in terms of
random molecular bombardment A good simulation explaining Brownian motion can

be achieved by gently shaking a tray of small marbles
with two or three larger marbles.

Simple examples of diffusion include:

Testing the understanding
2. Use of
resources
Videos of Brownian motion can be found on YouTube. One example of smoke particles being bombarded by
air particles is:

Marble simulation is shown as part of a larger set of experiments in this link:

4. Reflection/R Students were able to understand the topic Solids, liquids and gases and their inter conversion, since they had
eview some prior knowledge about the topic. They could also understand the kinetic particle theory, diffusion and
Brownian motion through the animations and videos along with the lecturing. but the understanding level was
different, Arvin and Boss showed an excellent grasping power. But Nameera and Pratham needed an extra
care. They were very slow in understanding , but the videos helped them.
