DESIGN FOR TORSION WITH SHEAR IN BEAM

I. Answer accordingly:
1) In the design of reinforced concrete beam, when do you provide reinforcement to counteract the
effect due to torsion?
2) Explain why in the edge beam along A in the figure below is called equilibrium torsion while the
edge beam along F is called compatibility torsion.
II. Problem Solving:
A reinforced concrete slab system is supported by beams as shown in the figure. The beams’ required
steel reinforcement were designed in Plate Nos. 1 & 2. Design the torsional and shear reinforcement
for the exterior, continuous, 6-bay beam, built integrally with 175 mm slab. Design considerations for
service dead loads, live loads and material strength for concrete and steel are the same.
