Igneous

Andesite

Properties: Andesite is commonly appears in the hues of gray, it has a density of 2.11 - 2.36 g/cm3 and a
specific gravity of 2.5 to 2.8.

Uses:

Andesite is used in road construction, making statues and monuments and also in designing landscapes.

Basalt

Properties:

Basalt normally has a dark grey to black color. It is a fine grained igneous rock composed mainly of
plagioclase and pyroxene materials and is also considered as aphanitic.

Uses:

Basalt is used as a rail track ballast and flooring. Crushed basalt is also incorporated in as an aggregate in
construction, from road bases to filter stone in drain fields.
Sedimentary

limestone

Properties:

The color of most limestones are varying shades of grey and tan. Limestone varies in hardness from
between 2 and 4 on Moh's scale and has a specific gravity of 2.65-2.75.

Uses: Limestone has numerous uses: as a building material, an essential component of concrete, as
aggregate for the base of roads, as white pigment or filler in products such as toothpaste or paints, or as
a chemical feedstock for the production of lime.

sandstone

Properties:

Sandstone has a color varying from red, green, yellow, gray and white. It lies between 6 to 7 on Moh's
Scale Density 2.32 to 2.42 Kg/m3 and a compressive Strength from 365 to 460 Kg/m2.

Uses:

Sandstone is widely used around the world, from road pavements, glass making and even house
constructions.
Metamorphic

marble

Properties:

Marble is usually a light colored rock has a hardness of three on the Mohs hardness scale and is mainly
composed of calcite ( CaCO3).

Uses: Marble is used for its beauty in architecture and sculpture. It is used for its chemical properties in
pharmaceuticals and agriculture, also for its optical properties in cosmetics, paint, and paper.

schist

Properties:

Schist usually has an alternating color of light and dark bands, it is also often shiny. Has a grain size of
fine to medium and has a hardness in between 3.5 to 4.

Uses

Schist is used often in building house or walls, it is also used also a roofing material and paint fillers.
Recently, this rock is incorporated as a decorative stone for jewelry.
