Lesson idea implementation:
As the teacher addresses the standards, the teacher will then start the lesson by showing the students the
video she made. Before the teacher shows the video, she explains to the students to listen closely to the
words and what they mean. After the video, the teacher asks the class what they thought. The teacher starts
the discussion by asking the students if they thought MLK was a loving, patient man, despite everything that
has been done to him. The teacher then asks the students what other positive characteristics MLK had. The
teacher will record all of their answers on an anchor chart. The teacher then explains how she specifically
chose that quote to put in her movie because she loved it and the message it had behind it. The teacher will
then show the students the whole video and ask them to pick a part that they really like. Once the students
have an idea on the part they like, the teacher will then address iMovie and how it works and how they will
be making their own movie. Every student will get a laptop and they will start searching for pictures,
uploading them to their iMovie and uploading the whole movie as well and they will start snipping their clip
to get it to where they want it. While all of this is going on, the teacher will be explaining how to do it while
walking around to every student helping them do it.
Since this will probably be a new experience for students, this project will take more than a day to
complete. The class will work on it all week for short periods of time. The project will be assessed by the
teacher using a rubric to make sure the students met all of the criteria, it will be scaled 1-3, 3 being the
highest score. Differentiated learning will be used for students who need it by the teacher letting students
watch the video as many times as they need to pick their part they want to and to watch the initial video that
started the lesson to answer the question the teacher had. The teacher may limit the effects and narrow
down the pictures for some students due to some students getting distracted easily. To extend the lesson, the
students could do a voice over on part of their video to the MLK pictures, explaining what the pictures were
and what was happening. To conclude this lesson, the teacher will ask students if they would like to share
their video with the class and we will also have a class discussion of important facts about MLK. The teacher
will also post everyone’s video to the class website for the parents and students to see. Everyone will be given
a rubric for their work, which will address feedback. I will also speak to them in person as well about how they
did.

Importance of technology:
Using a multimedia authoring tool is critical to this project because it is engaging to the viewer, letting them
watch the content and see pictures and hear music about this historical figure, rather than just reading about
it. It’s also critical because it allows students to be creative by choosing their own favorite part out of the
video and making their own video using that clip. Having the students use their voice and them getting a
choice in the matter makes this project engaging and memorable for them. This specific project could be
completed without this piece of technology, but the experience and creativity would be lost without using
this piece of technology. Other types of technology used in this project would be the device the students are
using (tablet) and the internet browser.

Internet Safety and Student Privacy:

Issues surrounding internet safety and student privacy could arise while doing this project, such as students
looking for pictures online. To minimize these risks, teachers should follow some basic guidelines. Teachers
should monitor everything the students are doing and should be able to visually see what they are doing at all
times when they are in her care. The teacher should write out on the board, where all students can see,
where exactly to go on the internet and what to type. Having it written on the board should alleviate spelling
issues students may have. Teachers should also teach students to never give out their passwords or
usernames to anyone and to always keep it in a safe place. Another good idea would be for teachers to have a
poster in the classroom that displays all of the internet safety and privacy rules that students should follow.

Teachers should always ask permission to administrators and parents before completing any big online
projects that could have internet/privacy risks. Transparency and honesty is key and will go a long way.
Reflective Practice:
This lesson idea will impact students learning by making them engaged with the content because they will be watching
and creating their own video about the content. They will have voice and choice, getting to choose their own clip from
the video to incorporate into their movie. The students getting to pick it themselves will let them feel free, encouraged
and engaged. To further extend this lesson, the teacher could have the students do a voice over when the pictures play
on their videos. The voice over could be the students explaining what was happening in the pictures. The other
technology tools that could enhance this lesson would be a microphone headset and the recording platform, Audacity,
to do their voice overs on their videos.
