Break Point by ShivGaurav

Story Synopsis: (Genre: Sports)

*NOT A BIOPIC*
While Naina Kishan Singh Saini (18), from Haryana, India is
playing her first ‘French Open Tennis Singles for Women, 2018’
match, her mind has gone into rewinding mode, and playing her own
past in flashbacks for her.

Cut to the Flashback, We See how just last year (2017), she got
ousted from her maiden Australian Open Tournament (Women’s),
after losing her first match in a big way.

As she is trying to stop these memories, they are erupting with a

double force. As now another flashback is showing us her first
day at the tennis court at the age of 6 where she was accompanied
by her Paternal Grandfather (because of whom she became the
tennis player in the first place), against the wishes of her real
father Bishen Singh Saini and how she learned to play tennis
defying his nonsense.

Here, back in the present, she wins her first match defying
everyone’s predictions.

In the next match again her past which was resting after the
first match is back to haunt her.

Cut to the Flashback, we see how Naina is continuing her playing

as her grandfather is fighting with her real father to let her
play & live her own life, which according to her own father is
not the prerogative of a girl in these old heartlands of India,
while her grandfather is asking her real father to grow up & let
go of such traditional buffooneries.
Here, back in the present, on the court, she wins her second
match too. After the match Naina is giving an interview to an
Indian Journalist.

Back in Sonipat, Haryana, India, her interview is watched by her

real father Bishen Singh Saini. He is recollecting his past, and
we see how 10 years ago, doctor had given him the best news of
his life that he is going to have a son, finally. And he was so
happy & desperate for a son that after doctor’s warning that the
baby could be fatal to his mother, he told doctor that he is
ready to take the risk, and it paid off, as he got a son,
although his wife died of complications. But why would he cry or
feel sorry? As she died by fulfilling her duty to him; of
procuring a son, thus she must have gone to heaven, for sure.

And soon he got married again to a woman, who thought like him.
Then they both schemed & stopped Naina’s education (she was
educated enough, more than that is not needed for girls). And
then how cunningly they sent his fool of a father on a pilgrimage
by tricking him & tried to marry off his 7 years old daughter
Naina to a good man from a reputed family, but failed, as his
bastard younger brother, Kishan Singh Saini bought police with
him and they beat up his guests & jailed him, for trying to marry
his own daughter, what the Law? If his brother couldn’t have done
that & wouldn’t have snatched Naina from his claws, she would
have procured 2-3 sons for her husband and made his name proud in
the community.

But no, his brother not only adopted his daughter, he let her
play in shorts in front of the whole world to see. Such a shame,
he cannot bear it. How can he? All these memories are angering
him, but he cannot do anything, as he doesn’t want to go to jail
again. Once was enough.

Here back to the French open tournament, today Naina had won two
of the remaining matches and playing in the quarter final match.
But again her past is back to play with her.

Cut to the flashback, she remembers how last year when she was
ousted from the Australian open, she decided to leave Tennis,
once & for all, but her current father, Kishan Singh Saini not
only stopped her from doing so but he continuously encouraged her
and enrolled her with a private coach Gurusingh Nijjar. And how
then she trained hard for one year to reach today’s state?

Back to the present, she wins her quarter final match fabulously.

But last year she had also lost one of her true guide &
supporter; her grandfather who died in the aftermath of which she
got ousted from Australian Open Tournament, last year.

Again back in the present, Naina wins her semifinal’s match too.
But she cannot celebrate, as she gets the news of her current
father Kishan Singh Saini’s demise. And she returns to India, to
perform last rites for her father. There she tells her current
mother (her aunt; Kishan Singh’s wife) that now she cannot play
her final match. But her current mother reminds her how her
current father, and her grandfather fought with her real father
and their community to bring Naina up to this stage, so now, she
cannot let it all go.

Thus her current mother brings Naina, along with her two sons,
back in the tournament.
Today, Naina is the first Indian to reach a final of a grand
slam, and she wants to win desperately, but how? As she is
playing against Serena Williams, world’s Number one player, and
her mind replies back, that she has to bring up all her hatred
towards her biggest enemy, her real father, Bishen Singh Saini.
Today her match is not with Serena Williams but with all such Men
(like her father) from India, who dishonors their daughters,
sisters, wives, mothers, in short women, and think least of them.

With this, Naina reaches a stage where both of them have won a
game each, and now are at equal on 5-5 in this game. Now Naina
must win this game. But all her hatred for her real father has
gone in a puff of smoke, when her heart reveals to her that He
was not her real father ever. She had a grandfather and a mother
who are no more. Although she had an aunt who is her mother now,
she also lost her real father just now. And these realizations
make her feel defeated, and when Serena on 30-0 returns with a
backhand, Naina knows she has lost it all. She kneels on the
court dejected & lost, closes her eyes & starts weeping silently.

And suddenly she hears her father’s voice ‘Oh my child, Naina,
don’t cry’. As she opens her eyes, he is standing before her
wiping off her tears. Then he makes her stand back on her feet.
Caresses her face and says ‘I’m not gone anywhere, but I’m in
you, my child, and my love is not so weak that it will let you
lose. You’ve to win, my dear, god’s promise & mine too, YOU MUST
WIN’.

As Naina’s reverie breaks, she sees that, Serena’s last shot

wasn’t a winning shot but a fault outside the service line. The
Umpire confirms it from the replay. She still has a chance & a
Break Point, to win this tournament. So, then, forgetting
everything, she puts all of herself, her might, her strength,
into this last chance and starts playing. One after another she
wins point & reaches 30-All, and then Serena’s double fault &
Advantage Naina. And Naina returns Serena’s last serve with such
a tremendous force, that Serena has no answer for it.

And the impossible happens, first time an Indian wins a Grand

Slam. And Naina writes her name with golden letters in the books
of history.

‘Naina Kishan Singh Saini, 17, Gudgaon, Haryana, India, Champion,

French Open Tennis Woman Singles Tournament, 2018.’
