1.0 PROJECT

MIs Gail (India) Limited has awarded to MIs. NRP projects Limited (Infrastructure Division), a
contract for laying 16" dia. HDD For BANAS River CrossingTotal 2.2 Km long in length.

2.0 PURPOSE
This work instruction is to lay guidelines and requirements and to establish a method or a
system to control the Lowering activity and inspection to be used for PERMANENT MITIGATION
MEASURE OF PIPE EXPOSED IN BANAS RIVER CROSSING AND ADJACENT AREA OF JAM NAGAR
LONI LPG PIPELINE Project.

3.0 REFERENCES

Following document shall in part or in totality form the reference document:

4.0 HEALTH,SAFETY & ENVIRONMENT

• NRP shall ensure that the special care to be adopted against snake / insects bite.
• All PPE is a must in this activity.
• Only trained personnel to be deployed for this activity.
• Personnel around must be informed evacuated to a safe distance.
• All Measuring & Test Equipments used must be well maintained . .

5.0 METHODOLOGY

a) NRP shall arrange to take levels as soon as the lowering activity is completed in presence TE / GAIL

to allow survey the centre line of the pipe and the level of pipeline in the trenches prior to

backfilling.

b) NRP shall make arrangements for measuring the deviations of the pipe centerline before backfilling.

If it is there, it shall be brought to the notice of TE / GAIL. For underground pipeline crossings and

overhead power line crossings, concrete slab/plastic grating to be provided as per Standard

c) Backfilling shall be commenced only after post padding_is done at least for 300 mm covering &

above the pipe. Post padding work shall start immediately after lowering & pipe cover shall be

checked immediately after lowering at every alternate joint.(24 Mtrs.)

d) GAIL's Warning mat / Impact Resistance Sheet shall be kept 500 mm below from the ground level.

e) Backfilling shall not be done until the pipe and appurtenances have been properly fitted and the

pipe is according to the ditch profile at the required depth that will provide the required cover and

has a bed which is free from extraneous material and which allows pipe to rest smoothly and

evenly. It is not rest upon any stone, hard lumps etc.

f) De-watering if required shall be carried out prior to backfilling & no backfilling allowed if the trench

is not completely de watered. Any saline water found during trenching / Backfilling shall be

discharged in to Drain / Canal at the nearest location available. Dewatering on ROW shall not be

allowed. In general trench should be dry prior to padding. The last 2 mtrs. lengths shall not be

backfilling at both ends to facilitate tie-ins of the lowered sections.

g) Backfilling shall be done with prior approval of TE/GAIL. If any backfilling is done without TE/GAIL

such uncovering and refilling shall be borne by NRP. Before start of backfilling NRP shall ensure the

provision of anti-buoyancy measures.

h) Prior to back filling it should be ensured that the coated portion is Holiday checked, NRP checked

post padding of 300mm minimum thick layer of soil is put over and all around the pipe

immediately after lowering

i) The backfill material shall be soil, sand, clay or other materials containing no materials, which could

damage the pipe and/or coating or leave voids in the backfilled trench. Each completed layer of

backfilling shall be carefully deposited, watered where necessary and thoroughly consolidated to

the satisfaction of TE / GAIL. The surplus material shall be neatly crowned directly over the trench

and the adjacent excavated areas on both sides of the trench to such a height, which will, proVide

for future settlement of the trench backfill during the maintenance period and thereafter. The

crown shall be high enough to prevent the formation of the depression in the soil when backfill has

settled into its permanent position.

j) If depression occurs after backfill, N RP shall carryout the remedial work. Surplus material left from

this operation shall be disposed off to the satisfaction of landowner or authority having

jurisdiction.

k) Where rock, gravel, lumps of hard soil or like materials are encountered at the time of trench

excavation, sufficient sand or select backfill materials shall be placed around and over the pipe to

form a protective cushion extending at least to a height of 300 mm above the top of the pipe.

Loose rock/stone of size not more than 150 mm may be returned to the trench after the required

selected backfill material has been placed.

m)When the trench has been dug through driveways or roads, all backfilling shall be executed with

sand or suitable materials (shall be approved by TE I GAIL) in suitable layers, which will be

thoroughly compacted. Compaction tests shall be carried out to ensure proper compaction and

avoid future settlement.

n) When backfilling the trenches in sloping terrain's or ste~p areas, where in the opinion of the TE /

GAIL the backfill may be washed out of the trench, sheet piling or other effective water breakers

across the trench shall be provided by NRP. This is to divert the flow of water away from the

trench into normal drainage followed before laying of the line. In No case, the water is to be

drained via the trench or via channels other than those followed before the line was laid.

0) Back filling in steep areas where slope is 10% or more shall be provided with breakers. These

breakers will consists of grout bags filled with 4:1 sand: Portland cement as per directions of TE /

GAIL Such works shall be at no extra cost to GAIL. NRP shall pay attention to the direction of back

filling in such steep areas.

p) NRP shall replace the top soil wherever applicable, which was stored separately during trenching

slope & soil stabilization to be carried out as per relev.ant specification & at locations shown in

alignment sheets or identified by TE / GAIL .For U/G pipeline crossings & overhead power line

crossings concrete slab 100 mm Thickness or plastic grating 6 mm thickness shall be provided as

per standard.

q) NRP shall carry out stabilization of backfill in sandy areas and other such places, as directed by the

TE / GAIL at no extra cost to GAIL.

r) The back fill shall be stabilized preferably with 150-mm layer of marl, mattresses of batch other

s) Temporary markers shall be installed during back filling and the survey to locate the pipeline axis.
These markers shall then be replaced with permanent markers. Back filling shall be carried out

preferably highest ambient temp.
