garbage will always be an issue, with more solid
wastest o b e a c c u m u l a t e d i n t h e a c a d e m e . T h u s , s o
l i d w a s t e management is a system for handling all of this garbage thruwaste
collection, sorting management, recycling programs,
andd u m p s . I n t h e p a s t , t h e e a r l y p r a c t i c e o f s o l i d w
a s t e m a n a g e m e n t w a s t h r o u g h t h e d i g g i n g o f p i t s a n d t h r o w i n g garba
ge into them. Solid waste management became a seriousissue when the University did not even
have a place to bury
itsg a r b a g e a n d t h e r e f o r e g a r b a g e b i n s b e c a m e a n a l t e r n a t i v e a r e a o f d i s
p o s a l . I t c r e a t e d a n u n p l e a s a n t e n v i r o n m e n t situation because
of the improper disposal. Thus in response,the PUP campuses must start to set up a proper
and
systematicg a r b a g e c o l l e c t i o n a n d s e g r e g a t i o n p r o c e d u r e s . I t c a n a l s o p
ractice to recycle or designate waste collection teams whichwould dispose ‘unusable
garbage’.Waste management is considered an important initiative doneby governments
and citizens alike to rehabilitate the safety andw e l l -
b e i n g o f t h e e n v i r o n m e n t . I t i s a l s o i m p o s e d i n t h e acade
mic community level in as much as to provide a
vibranta n d h e a l t h y l e a r n i n g e n v i r o n m e n t t h a t i s c o n d u c i v e t o t h e exer
cise of the pursuit of
education.A s t h e l a r g e s t s t a t e u n i v e r s i t y i n t h e c o u n t r y i n
t e r m s o f population, housing more than 70,000 students from differentp a r t s
o f t h e P h i l i p p i n e s , t h e s t a t e o f w a s t e s e g r e g a t i o n a n d disposal in
P U P i s r e f l e c t i v e o f t h e s t a t e o f s u c h i n t h e w h o l e higher education sector. If the
Polytechnic University provides ahealthy intellectual hub for learners and teachers, the
practicewill serve as a blueprint for all higher education institutions in

the country. The Polytechnic University of the Philippines, beingo n e o f t h e b i g g e s t s t a t e

universities in the land, is
importanta n d s e r v e s a s a v i t a l c o m p o n e n t o f t h e c o u n t r y ’ s p r e
s e n t educational system. It provides opportunities for prospectivestudents who
want to pursue learning beyond the boundariesof a traditional campus. It is therefore
imperative that it has theobligation to provide its students with relevant and
accessibleeducation. Unquestionably, included in this relevant educationthat needed
to be propagated and taught is societal value suchas proper waste management.
