Chapter I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

Background of the Study

Jute Mallow (Corchorus olitorious L.) is a long, delicate, shiny vegetable

fibre that can be spun into coarse and solid strings. It is a variety plant of around

40-100 species in the family Malvaceae. Jute Mallow (Corchorus olitorious L.) is

a short-day plant and grow on the months of February to November. Its leaves

consumed in the cuisines and dishes of various countries. Here in our country,

Jute Mallow was known as “Saluyot” and it is edible and extensively eaten mostly

by the Ilokanos. It is not just only contains nutritional content but it has also the

capability to heal any diseases and can prevent to certain cancers. Just on

September 2014, a report appeared that this plant could be used to cure Ebola

Virus disease (Azoma Chickwe, 2014).

Paper can be utilized as a part of numerous ways. It is valuable in writing,

printing books, magazines, records, paperwork’s, and so forth, cleaning, and

even it is utilized as decoration and crafting. Seeing this uses, paper gives a

great advantage in individual's everyday living. Occasionally, the papers turn into

one of extraordinary demand to individuals. Men, women, students, experts, and

even ordinary citizens are utilizing papers and paper products.

But despite of its uses, paper production has a great impact in our
environment. It takes how many trees to be cut to make a great amount of paper

enough to use by billions of people living in this world. The amount of paper and

paper products was enormous, that is sometimes the loggers having an

irresponsible pulpwood cutting, kaingin and deforestation for paper

production and that may lead to having a great calamity in this country and surely

it can affect people’s living and even lives. We cut thousands or even millions of

trees everywhere but it takes years to make a tree grow. And not only for that,

has producing paper needed chemicals, not knowing that the chemicals used

have effects in our environment. And consumers are not aware of it and

sometimes wasting a lot of papers. Thus, researchers caught an attention to that.

This study was conducted to investigate and to analyze the potential use

of Jute Mallow as an alternative source of paper and helps to mitigate the crisis

and threat in our environment. Since Jute Mallow is abundant in our country and

it has benefit to the society, useful and affordable, and this plant is a good source

of fibre, this was used as an alternative source of paper. We researchers thought

of the feasibility of Jute Mallow leaves as an alternative source in making paper.

Statement of the Problem:

The study will be conducted to compare a paper made of Jute Mallow

(Corchorus olitorious L.) and commercial paper, to know its feasibility, and

whether it can be an alternative source of paper to help the society by providing

the needs of every individuals in a cheaper way.

It aims to answer the following:

1. What are the characteristics of Jute Mallow (Corchorus olitorious L.) paper

and commercial paper in terms of:

a. Texture

b. Tensile Strength

c. Heat resistance

2. Is there any significant difference on the texture, tensile strength, and heat

resistance of the Jute Mallow (Corchorus olitorious L.) paper and

commercial paper?

3. Is Jute Mallow (Corchorus olitorious L.) paper can be an alternative source

of paper?

Hypothesis:

The following hypothesis will be tested at 0.05 level of significance. There

will be no significant difference on the tensile strength of the Jute Mallow paper

and the commercial paper.

Significance of the Study:

This study of Jute Mallow (Corchorus olitorious L.) leaves as an alternative

source of paper intended to give benefit to the society as a whole and may able

to provide the needs of every individuals in a cheaper way. However, the study

may become beneficial to the following:

To the manufacturers, that this would give inspiration that using

alternative fibres in paper making can lead to additional incomes and provides

cheaper and affordable paper.

To the readers, that this study could give awareness on how practical

Jute Mallows can be as an alternative source of paper, and to educate them how

to extract fibres from plants and in making your own paper.

To other researchers, that this may be part of their basis in their own

research about Jute Mallows as an alternative source of paper, and as a

guideline to improve and discover new understandings about the study.

To researchers themselves, the study aims to help preserve our world

by using Jute Mallows as an alternative source of paper. Also to be able to

contribute information about a possible material as a source in creating paper.

Scope and Delimitations:

The main purpose of this study was to determine the potential use of Jute

Mallow (Corchorus olitorious L.) leaves as an alternative source of paper. This

study utilized Analysis of Variance to test the characteristics on the tensile

strength of Jute Mallow paper and commercial paper.

This study would take months to procure the final result of the research

work using the process of experimentation in making the paper. As Jute Mallow

could be seen in our backyard or could be bought at the market, we researchers

would not have any difficulties in finding one. This study undergoes with only one

replication to be compared by the commercial paper.

The researchers would conduct the study at Purok Malipayon, Barangay

San Isidro, General Santos City.

Operational Definition of Terms:

For better understanding of this research study, the following terms were

defined operationally.

1. Jute Mallow (Corchorus olitorious L.) - It is an erect, glabrous, annual

plant or shrub, growing up to 2 meters high. The leaves are ovate,

laceolate, toothed margins. Flowers are solitary with yellow petals on the

axils. The fruit is a capsule with many black seeds.

2. Paper- It is a substance consisting of felted thin sheet of compactly

interlaced fibres of cellulose etc. obtained from wood, rags, straw, etc.

3. Potential- It is existing but not fully developed, exploited, etc.

4. Pulpwood- It is a tree or log used to manufacture paper, absorbent pulp,

cardboard, fiberboard and other wood fiber-based products. Generally

these trees are the lowest-value product in a stand of trees.

5. Fiber- It is anything that is very thin, much longer than it is wide and

flexible. It is mostly made up of organic (carbon-containing) chemicals,

such as found in all living things.

6. Feasibility- It is the quality of being feasible; possible to do or achieve.
