Student Response and Assessment Tools

Lesson Idea Name: Rocks, Rocks, Rocks!

Content Area: Science
Grade Level(s): 3rd
Content Standard Addressed:
S3E1 Students will investigate the physical attributes of rocks and soils.
b. Recognize the physical attributes of rocks and minerals using observation (shape, color, texture),
measurement, and simple tests (hardness).
d. Determine how water and wind can change rocks and soil over time using observation and research.

Technology Standard Addressed:

2b. Students engage in positive, safe, legal, and ethical behavior when using technology, including social
interactions online or when using networked devices.
Selected Technology Tool:
☐ Socrative ☐ iRespond ☐ Quizlet ☐ Plickers ☒ Kahoot! ☐ Office365 Forms
☐ Other:
URL(s) to support the lesson (if applicable):

Technology that student will use to respond to questions/prompts:

☐ Computer ☐ Hand-held student response system (like iRespond) ☐ Phone ☒ Tablet (such as iPad)
☐ Other wireless device (such as iPod Touch)
Type of session:
☒ Teacher-Paced ☐ Student-Paced
Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):
☒ Remembering ☒ Understanding ☒ Applying ☒ Analyzing ☒ Evaluating ☐ Creating

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

This assignment may support UDL in the following ways:
 Explicit opportunities for spaced review and practice
 Provide alternatives in the requirements for rate, timing, amplitude, and range of motor action
necessary to interact with instructional materials, physical manipulatives, and technologies
 Design activities so that outcomes are authentic, communicate to real audiences, and are purposeful
Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity.
Prior to this activity, the teacher should introduce the different types of rocks (Metamorphosis, Igneous, and
Sedimentary). While introducing them, the teacher should give the students picture examples as well as key
words that describe the characteristics of the various types of rocks. This should be something that has been
done before because the SRT will be like a mini quiz to test what the students are learning.

Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):
☐ Assess prior knowledge ☐ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☐ To illuminate common
misconceptions ☒ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) ☐ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☐ Test preparation
☐ Survey/Poll ☐ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Student Response and Assessment Tools
Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity:
The teacher should read the questions out loud in an effort to ensure the students are reading the questions
correctly. The teacher also sets the amount of time for each question, so the students have a fair chance to
answer them.

The students will be asked to answer the questions; they should read and answer each question carefully.
They won’t be allowed to move on to the next question until the time is up or change their answer. The task
should take from 5-7 minutes with 8 questions at about 20 seconds.

Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):

☒ Multiple choice ☐ Multiple select ☐ True/False ☐ Yes/No
☐ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-10):

Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?

☒ Yes ☐ No
☐ Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)
Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
☒ Yes
☐ No
Why or why not?
The students will be able to see if they answered the questions correctly or not after the timer for the
question ends. Afterwards, I will give feedback to the students so they understand why the correct answer is
the right one and why/how the others are incorrect.
Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity?
Once the SRT is completed, the teacher will review the answers. The teacher will also use this to assess the
student’s strengths and weaknesses based on the results of the SRT. If needed, the teacher should review the
rock types or their characteristics based on the class results.
How will the data be used?
Because this SRT will be a formative assessment, I will use the results to see if there are trends in
misconceptions or not. The data will be used for me to see where my students are in terms of the topic we
are learning about and where I may need to adjust or change how the information is being given to the
students.
Describe your personal learning goal for this activity.
Incorporating a SRT into my class will allow me to have technology used by my students throughout the day. I
want my students to be able to know how to use these types of technologies, so I intend to incorporate things
like this into my classroom often for my students benefit.
Reflective Practice:
I think that by having a different means of assessing students, they will be more open to taking assessment
and participating in class. This application can be used for any subject and any topic and can even be used in a
different format other than a quiz.
